That way all I have to do is hold left and right on the DPad and press L to get a new egg, occassionally dropping off the failures and making room for more eggs.
It essentially lets you play the game one handed.
They've had it since gen 3 when shoulder buttons were first a thing. Makes things a whole lot easier.
