The only way it would work is if they continued to release new regions and Pokemon through the handheld games, that are backwards compatible with the MMO, but make it so that NOTHING from those newer games, Items or Pokemon can be found in the MMO. This would encourage players to continue playing the series, as to stay up to date. Essentially, the handheld games would simply become expansion packs.
This would be a massive change from what GF are used to, as well as a large risk. If it worked, it would be amazing, but can you really see such a thing happen to Pokemon anytime soon?
