What the hell is Malamar's role in a team? I love his typing and the ability Contrary, but I am not sure how to EV train him.

What other attacks can he learn that reduce stats? I haven't played competitively since 3rd gen, and haven't really played pokemon since Diamond and Pearl.

None so far, but there is a new entry hazard (sticky web) that reduces Speed by 1 upon switching in, and Contrary reverses the effect.

It can have many roles really. It can be used to wall and create stat reductions for the other team or you can make it a special or physical attacker. The contrary superpower is arguably the strongest right now but other roles are completely viable options.
