What's the best Grass-type starter out of all six generations? I figure mega Venusaur tips this in its direction too easily, so excluding it (but not regular Venusaur).

They all tend to do different things nowadays, so it's hard to compare directly

I'm not entirely sure what chesnaught's best role will be

Torterra, easily.
Venusaur and Sceptile are good, too.
Chesnaught is decent.
Seperior is meh
Meganium is shit

Best: Venusaur. Chlorophyll Venusaur has so much move and ability synergy it's ridiculous.

Chlorophyll + Solar Beam + Growth = Wow.

My favorite is Torterra, though. Grass/Ground that gets Earthquake as soon as you reach Torterra. Hell, he gets awesome shit like Curse and Wood Hammer too.

I would have picked Bulbasaur even without a mega evolution which is bad anyways.

One of the nicest examples of what a Pokemon design and evolution should be imo.
