The Gen I games were beaten only by Tetris; which came bundled with the Gameboy. The Gen II games were only beaten by Gen I and Tetris; making them the third biggest selling titles on the Gameboy/Gameboy Color.
Gen IV and V games were beaten by the hugely popular 'casual' games Brain Age and Nintendogs, which is a bit like comparing how many people play GTA V to how many people play Farmville. The Mario games always sell in their millions.
Gen III was simply the most popular game at the time; but in terms of numbers it did sell less than the other generations.
