The battery runs out quite quickly and them I'm stuck leaving it recharge when I wanna be playing.

Unless you're outside, charging and playing shouldn't really be problem.
But no one takes their DS outside, anyway.

I've been charging and playing but the battery isn't getting any higher and it was beginning to become really slow loading the battle screen...

I work 12 hour shifts at night with no charger available most of the time. 3D and wireless off, in powersave mode with my DS on the lowest brightness setting tends to give me at least six hours of playtime before I need to charge an hour and continue the night.

Did you also charge the battery fully when you bought it instead of playing, and never leave it charging overnight because it's a fire hazard, too.
