Quite a few shinies have been found there. I think that the ratio may be affected by how many friends you have though, and people with loads of friends just happen to use the Friend Safari more (duh) thus finding shinies there. Who knows.

Right now I'm trying for a Masudad Chespin. I juststarted my 5th box, last shiny I got was a Ponyta while I was grinding out on Mt. silver in HG before B/W came out.
I completed the National Dex in B2 and never saw a single shiny outside the ones it gives you.
Do I have abysmal luck?

Step 1: Get two mareeps with great IVs, one of which needs to be Japanese (and this is why it's almost impossible)
Step 2: Have one of them be modest in their nature
Step 3: Give the modest nature mareep an everstone
Step 4: Give the other mareep Destiny Knot (lets the baby inherit 5 IVs instead of 3)
Step 5: Breed until your balls fall off

That's the only way to guarantee good IVs, right nature, and shiny. Otherwise you're just going to trial and error it.

I don't even bother with trying to get good IVs on my shinies. It's a fucking enormous waste of time and you could set up 10 teams with great IVs (not shiny) in the same period.

I've been MMing Carbink for the hell of it. No luck so far, but I'm only about 1 box in.

Yes, hordes work, as you are bumping into 5 at once, so there is a higher chance that one of them could be shiny.

Don't feel bad about not being able to do the Radar stuff, it's a little harder this Gen, what with the smaller grass patches and such.

I fucking loved that they brung the pokeradar back. When I actually finish X/Y I'll try and fucking use it more. Barely used it in a borrowed version of D/P I had.

So far on my list, I've acquired a Shiny Pichu from about ~20 eggs (Japanese Fem Pikachu, English Furret), and now I'm on a hunt for a shiny Dedenne (English fem Dedenne, Japanese Eevee).

Up to 120 eggs so far, wish my luck!

Hunting for a shiny female Mawile, if I get a shiny male I hope one of you guys would trade...I did eventually have to reset as I had filled so many boxes I didn't have enough money to take my pokes out of the breeding centre. :S

So I'm using masuda method for clauncher, around box 6 or 7. I'm worried it'll have bad IVs though. What I'm doing is checking each offspring to see if it has 31 special attack, and when I do I'll replace the clauncher in the daycare with it. Then when I get one that has 31 special attack and HP, I'll swap that one.

Is that how I'm supposed to do it? I'm not sure how IVs get passed down.

My first legit shiny was either a kricketot or a weedle.
Kricketot was in pearl or platinum, and when I saw I found a shiny legit without any hunting I just threw every single ball at it, caught it, and evolved it into a kricketune. Gold fuckin deleleleWOOOOOOOOOOP
The weedle was in firered, and it was one of my first encounters when i started the game. I was hyped as fuck and kept it in my party for the longest time, but then the worst thing happened after I saved in lavender tower.
The game's internal battery ran dry and deleted my save data.
Needless to say, I was fucking pissed.

Here is my stock:

All of the ditto's are japanese and I am basically trying to breed a timid shiny disable gastly with as many 31 IV's as possible, I have the destiny knot on a ditto and an everstone on the gastly male to pass down timid nature.

How can I improve my method? I really don't care about attack, I just need to breed into that gastly male 31 special defense.
