So, I am completely uninformed when it comes to the entire IV/EV/Breeding scene.

I would greatly appreciate it if some of you could take your time to help someone out. Lay down the basics of this entire area, tips, etc.

A few more things I am unsure about are: Using the PokeRadar and MMing(?). Also the Friend Safari.

Any guides/tips for Super Training?

I apologise for starting a thread just for this, if there's an ongoing thread that would help me out, please link me to it.

the most important thing to keep in mind is that IVs are almost essentially meaningless. As long as you don't have a fucking 1 in a stat (you probably don't) you're gonna turn out all right. They don't have that big of an impact on endgame stats.

EVs, on the other hand, do. Just do super training in whatever stats you need until it fills up and you can't add anymore. Hooray, you're EV trained!

And then natures are way easy to understand (although obv. they come before EV training.) google a list of them and get the one you want. Usually you want +whateverattack at the expense of -theotherattack, but of course that's a gross generalization.

boom now you can competitive with the best of them

It's possible but it's SO time-consuming to the point of wasting your life for such minimal games. On your deathbed you're not gonna be glad you spent a month grinding out IVs for your dudes.

There's a guy in the endgame city pokecenter, calls himself "the judge." He's judging your pokemon's IVs. You want him to say "It's better than average" or something nicer than that, and then have him say "its best stat is [whatever]." Then you're good.

Yeah, I found that guy and was a bit confused.

I see that Friend Safari Pokemon have 2 maxed IVs. How would I know which ones are maxed? Just the 2 highest stats?
Also, the post (from >>14832192) then says to try get a Ditto with 3 maxed IVs - do Friend Safari Pokemon have 2 or 3 maxed IVs?... a bit confused here.

Also, I'm a bit unsure on the Destiny Knot IV passing thing.

I THINK holding Destiny Knot gives a chance for one or both parents to pass down their exact IVs. That could be wrong, it's stuff I'm sure from my tone you can gather I've never messed around with. But I feel like that's what I've read. And yeah, a Ditto with good IVs would then be good 'cause that's what's usually doing the breeding.

Differences of note: destiny knot is a held item that changes inherited IVs from 3 from the parents to 5 from the parents. That means that 1 stat is rolled.
Also pokemon captured in friend safari have at least 2 stats with perfect IVs.
Male pokemon can now pass on hidden abilities.

Depends on what you're doing. If you're playing with more than just your friends, you'll probably want to choose 2 or 3 IVs and perfect them and assume anything decent is good enough.

Use an IV calculator online and the man in the Pokemon Centre. From there you can see which IVs are strong and weak. The nature of the Pokemon would be a quick way of saying if it's bad or not but it comes down to stats.

However, these EVs can and will play a vital role in your Pokemon's battling efficiency.

For every 4 EVs in a particular stat, your Pokemon will gain 1 additional stat point. Since a stat can have 255 EVs total, and a Pokemon can have 510 EVs overall, this means a Pokemon can receive a maximum of 63 extra stat points in one stat, and 127 extra points across the board.

127 total? But 63 times 2 equals 126! Where'd the extra point come from?

The simplest EV setups (known as "EV spreads") involve maxing out 2 stats by investing 255 EVs into both. However, you'll notice that 255 is not divisible by 4. Since Pokemon games round down, this means that both of those stats will have 3 "leftover" EVs that serve no purpose. Fortunately, there's a way to make use of those 6 total leftover EVs.

Instead of investing 255 EVs into a stat, invest only 252. (I'll go into how to invest EVs later on.) This frees up the 3 leftover EVs for use. While 3 EVs will not do anything by themselves, investing only 252 into the other stat gives you 6 that you can use. Four of those EVs can be invested into a third stat, giving you a single stat point boost; some people find this pointless, but I believe it's best to make as much as you can out of EVs. The final 2 EVs are useless, and do not matter (unless you're doing complicated multi-stat EV spreads, which I will not go into).

Here's an example: I have a Pikachu I want to train to be a fast special attacker. Naturally, I would want to invest EVs into Special Attack and Speed. I could take the lazy route and just put 255 EVs into both stats, but if I chose to invest 252 into each instead, I could put the final 6 EVs into its HP stat to give Pikachu just a tad more survivability. It's not much, but every bit helps.

I'm so confused...

I'll provide an example, then. Suppose I find a wild Pikachu. I catch the Pikachu, and after calculating its IVs (I'll explain this later in the guide), I find that it has the following IV setup (known as an "IV spread", just like with EVs):

HP: 25
Attack: 2
Defense: 14
Special Attack: 30
Special Defense: 0
Speed: 31

Discounting EVs for the moment, I know from this table that when my Pikachu reaches level 100, its Attack stat will be 2 points higher than another level 100 Pikachu with an Attack IV of 0. Likewise, the Pikachu I found will have a Speed stat 31 points higher than that of another Pikachu with a Speed IV of 0!

As you can see, IVs play an integral role in calculating stats. That's why it's near-essential to get the best IVs you possibly can, especially if you're a competitive battler fighting other players. Not only that, but IVs also determine the type and power of a Pokemon's Hidden Power, so it's important to consider IVs for that purpose as well.

Pretty much the easiest solution I found yet.

Just hunt that Safari, I was there for an hour and came out with 3 Ditto with 3 31 IVs

Correct about the first point

Depends on the stat.
For example if I get a ditto with 31 HP 31 Sp.Atk 31 Speed and rubbish ATK I ain't gonna give a shit.
Otherwise, it's a stat that could potentially be passed down and would bum you out, but remember that it can be weeded out as well, so if you get 3 good stats and one rubbish, it doesn't necessarily mean the ditto is trash entirely.

Does Destiny Knot work better if the mother has good IVs? The Pokemon I want to breed with Ditto has the nature I want and most of the IVs but she will be getting the Everstone I assume?

I got one of the level 30 dittos from the friend safari which supposedly have perfect IVs

I looked at it's characteristic and it says "Alert to sounds" which corresponds to speed. So is speed it's perfect IV?

I don't use an IV calculator, I usually just go for max IVs so I haven't really found the need for one.

I guess otherwise the solution would be to go to Serebii, find the Pokemon's base stats, then find a Pokemon with the same stat and calculate it at a calculator like Psypoke's.

But again, I find this redundant, you should aim for 4 maxed stats for your mons.

Probably a Pokemon that benefits from having a low value in that stat.
They usually explain that in the comment.

Most of the time it's low speed for trick room or gyro ball or w/e

Unfortunately you cannot acquire Hidden Abilities, the Pokemon is found with them in the wild [Safari or Hordes] and can then be bred onto the offsprings.
That said, in Mawile's case, the best ability is by far intimidate.
You switch in, get a free Intimidate, then mega evolve. No reason to use other abilities.

You don't.... really. It's super theoretical and it's a really unimportant margin.
It's just an 'ideal' sort of situation - smogon analyzes are mostly relevant to simulators like Showdown, where you set w/e you want.

That depends on how Destiny Knot functions.
I'll repeat: Supposedly it transfers the stats from either parents randomly, so it doesn't matter who holds it.
That said, if you breed and feel like you aren't getting results, it might just be that it HAS to be on the Pokemon with the more desirable IVs.

Example:
I have a shitty Ditto and a Timid Froakie with 5 31 IVs
I put the knot on ditto and the Everstone on Froakie

After 6-7 eggs I see that I'm barely getting more than 1 perfect IV

That's when you should switch the knot to Froakie and find yourself a Timid ditto to hold the everstone

Otherwise it's just fine. But ideally get a Ditto with 2 desired stats to make it easier.

I know that, but - well, I'm trying to breed a tyrunt with poison and ice fang. It's taking waaaay too long to get an arbok, so I was wondering if I could breed poison fang onto a female tyrunt, then later (once I've sorted out IVs) breed ice fang onto her child at the same time passing down poison fang

New Destiny Knot mechanic is broken as fuck. In under an hour I caught a FS Larvesta and Beautifly and in 6 eggs i managed to breed a Timid Morning sun Larvesta with perfect Def,SpA,SpD and Speed. Its completely insane.
