That's not how it works, the pixels are literally just larger, which makes everything seem a bit more pixelated than the shit resolution and pixel density on the original does.

Really, both are shit consoles, I'd just go with whatever's cheaper to save a few bucks and if you have the cash to spare go with whichever feels more comfortable for you to use.

but get the XL. I was holding my brother's 3DS, and they should rename that shit to the 3DSXS for extra small. Thing's like a gameboy micro.

the xl just plain looked better and clearer

i don't know of how they compare with long term use instead of just a few minutes, but i wouldn't expect that to change anything. the xl just seems nicer.

I got a 3ds before X and Y came out, then bought a XL for my Fiancee so she can play with me. The XL really looks worse like how >>14882860 said. I'd advise getting the 3DS and buy the holder that comes with the extra Analog stick and buttons, it's comfy as fuck.
