I think when you hit a chain of 40, it's better to just reset, rather than going into non-shiny patches.

Here's my essential rules to chaining, and what I always follow to get that sweet 40th chain spot, which I have got consistently since

Never go for patches 1 square away from you even if they shake the hardest

Optimal bushes are 3-4 squares away from you that shake the heaviest, if there's a multiple bushes that shake the fastest, go for the one thats the furthest away

Bushes on the edge of your field are technically safe, but you might have the radar generate the next 4 bushes outside of the field onto dead tiles like, roads, walls, trees, dirt, which will break your chain if it generates the next 4 onto those

I like to avoid adjacent bushes that shake the heaviest, just to be safe

Be patient and save before you waste all your repels. As a tip, I suggest using a pokemon with a lot of PP on his moves to track how many times you have fainted a pokemon (charizards wing slam is 35/35) so that keeps track easier

When you hit your 40th chain, do not engage any longer, keep resetting till you hit your shiny patch

Shiny patches will sparkle and created a dinging noise

Also I just broke my chain because I went for the patch right next to me that moved a lot, guess you're right, only go for patches 4 steps away from you.

Okay now I think I actually got it.

So I should always avoid:

-patches that shake near me no matter what
-patches that shake near borders

And the rest is pretty much paying attention to patches?

What's the average amount of eggs you guys go through trying to Masuda? I started breeding on Monday and I've gone through over 1,600 eggs.

If you follow my post with these rules in mind you will chain to 40 no problem.

Of course there is always a chance that you will break it due to RNG, and that does happen even if you follow the rules, but so keep at it

I chained 40 smeargles last night and hit my bicycle and broke it lel, so if you get tired, take a break MID BATTLE, never after a fight, so you dont run into a shit bush when you return

I just did some chaining for the purpose of experimenting and I actually had pretty damn good luck ignoring the whole distance thing and just going for the most violent patch.
I chained long enough that I'm pretty damn confident that patch shake type is way more important than distance now.

Yup, this was the first change I noticed, it logically makes sense due to the placement of fields in this game, they are sporadic and difficult to set up your 'reset grid' so this compensates for the lack of good patches of grass generated in this generation.

As long as you have the patience, I would stand 3 squares away from the edge if you have that much space, and then try to chain the heaviest bushes 1 tile away from the edge, this will be risky and time consuming but possible

You will need to reset a lot.

Here's my theory on chaining while having your legendary birds in the wild still, when the music tempo changes, I believe it means that the legendary is on your Route and can be engaged, I reset 4-5 times until it has left my route, it seems to be a warning, or rather an alert that the legendary is on your route.

Infact this makes so much sense outside of the ideas of chaining shinys, the radar will 'detect' the legendary, and this can be used to hunt your legendary.

I have run into my moltres every time this music plays.

I found out the hard way too. Bred forever for shiny munchlax for my buddy who insisted on having it their nature. Sent the egg. Hatched normal. So I said
"Okay, reset and send the egg back"
MFW they went right into the trade with the normal munchlax, having let the game save and not go back to the egg so I could hatch it shiny for them.

I can't stress this enough. No matter what you want to do in the biology field, your undergraduate is the only time to pad your resume. If you don't do it, everyone else will, and you'll be playing catch up your entire career. You can NEVER have too much stuff on your resume, and with the job market as saturated as it is you need every advantage you can get over other candidates.

Entry level biology jobs are non-existent without specialized degrees/certifications, and if you want to go to grad school you'll be competing with med school rejects. I put in 25 job applications this summer, I heard back from four, and only two offered me an interview. This is with two years of laboratory experience as well as a publication to my name.

I would try to reset as much as possible just to train your ear, there are 2 different things you need to listen for and look for

1) The sound must be the loudest rustling when you activate the Radar

2) The bush you are going for must shake the most

Keep resetting to familiarize yourself with these variables.

You will notice the difference, and remember if you are unsure of what you heard and saw, reset, always reset instead of taking a risk and breaking your chain.
