Bouffalant. Why did they make a second normal bull type? Why didn't they make it an evolution to Tauros? Why did they give it a gigantic ridiculous afro? Why didn't they make it an evolution to Tauros? Why didn't they make it a fighting type? WHY DIDN'T THEY MAKE IT AN EVOLUTION TO TAUROS?

Because the Unova Pokedex took existing Pokemon that Game Freak decided were "core" Pokemon (so, your early-game birds, bugs and rodents, but also bats, jellyfish, Pokeball-mimics, cows, pollutants and lab-grown legendaries), and slapped a new skin on them.

Bouffalant isn't meant to be a relative of Tauros, it's meant to be its replacement.

Even if it was a bull (it's a bison/American Buffalo, since Unova is, you know, based on America) it could just be a related species. You don['t bitch about how there are a ton of rodent pokemon instead of all being evolutions of Pikachu.

a) For everyone saying "Because it's different species, duh" that's never stopped them before.

b) Because Bouffalant was introduced in Black/White who had a completely separate 150, with no new evolutions from previous games. Perhaps this design was generations old, and had intended it to be an evo of Tauros, but decided instead to use it in Black/White. We'll never know.
