Learn type matchups.

Learn how to effectively EV train (basically just train a Pokemon's two strongest stats; sometimes three).

Learn how to recognize good base stats and movesets (anything below 75 is bad, anything above 100 is good).

Learn a few key Pokemon's defensive layout (for example, you would try to avoid using Flamethrower on a Regice because it has super high Sp.Def in the first place).

etc.

Plus EV training is easier than ever before thanks to Gen 6.

That's good advice! I have a vague understanding of how to EV train and how to breed for IVs, my main issue is that I'm shit at predicting what my opponent's guy has in store for me.
