What's the point of rivals? I'm serious - it makes sense in RBY, where the rivalry actually affects the story, and actually culminates in something, but every rivalry since has just been a friendly rivalry where the rival helps you and wishes you well. Except for GSC, where it just has no point at all.

but I agree rivals should go back to being like Gary and Silver. Sadly they never will because it's become a common myth among developers that kids prefer games where everyone's super nice to them all the time.

How are Gary and Silver good rivals because they're dicks? How is that logical in any way? They still fucking battle you, right? Like any other rival, right? What difference is there if some asshole comes, loses to you, calls you weak anyway and leaves and some guy coming up to you, losing to you and saying he'll catch you later?

because for a good rival dynamic there needs to be friction between the characters. That's the driving force behind the desire to be better than them. It's more impassioned than it can be with some sweet girl next door.

Going off on a tangent but it helped that Gary always seemed to be one step ahead of you. With the newer rivals it always seemed like you were superior to them, and because of that they seemed pointless.

Sure there is, Not to the amount of Blue and Silver but there's always a competitive edge between you and the rivals.

Except my friends take their sweet ass time and apparently can't count past 3 unless they end up becoming the game's Champion.

At least in Red/Blue I was always unsure if Gary was just gonna pop out of nowhere and go HEY SMELL THIS and wipe the floor with my ass. Now it's like I don't even have the motivation to progress because "Eh, whenever they decide to fight me I'll just nuke them."

I think this is it, man. Your Rival can be friendly but they need to seem like a real threat. Imagine if next gen you have a super playnice neighbor rival who beats all the gyms before you and is always 10 levels higher than you. Then, when you get to the climax of the game, the main villain/rampaging legendary swats your rival aside like it's nothing, and you have to step up.

I don't know, Gary could be as far ahead of you as he wanted, but whenever you faced him; he was still piss-easy.

I think in the next gen rivals battles should be much more difficult and if you lose, you don't rematch. Your loss is now essentially canon and the game reacts to that.

Same with Hugh
Serena eventually gets a Mega Ring to match yours.

The point is that although they may not be like Blue, They had their pros and that's what makes them great rivals.Not every rival have to be like Blue to work not to mention him having a terrible champion team in the 1st place.

Not saying that Blue is a terrible rival, but seriously even he had flaws of his own and is not perfect.I like himm but not that much.

In a battle between friends you know there has to be a loser, and if you lose then at least you can accept it and be happy for your friend's victory.

A battle between rivals, as it was with Gary and Silver, was more than that. Each was trying to put the other in their place and there was a lot at stake because you each had something to prove, and if you lost it wasn't a loss you could just shake off.

If you lost between your friends, it would hurt just as much as losing against Blue or Silver since that's a tally in their name.

Being friends does not ruin the rivalry spirit for when the two of you start battling, there's no need to be cool for there's only the goal of winning the battle.

Look at Serena's dialogue and see that even through she's a friend, she gets dishearten by each loss.

It's much worse losing to someone you hate than someone you're friends with. It's not even disputable. When you're competing against a friend you want to "win the competition", when you're competing against someone you hate you;re trying to stick it to them, it's not about the battle anymore it's about proving who is top dog, and you lose a lot more pride there than you would with a friend.

A lot of people seem to be saying that the rival needs to be a threat to be good, which I agree with, but they are saying it with a context that "being friendly" means you are not a threat. Blue and Silver are dicks, and are also good rivals, but they are not good rivals because they are dicks. They have constantly evolving teams and battle you frequently throughout the game and pose a challenge. That is what makes a good rival.

Rivals in gen 3 and 6 (I can't remember if gen 5 had good rivals or not) are bad rivals because they do not have full teams or fight you frequently enough to matter. If they had the same teams and amount of battles but were dicks, they would not suddenly be better rivals.

Barry was a great rival and filled the same requirements that Blue and Silver did, the only difference being that he was your friend. He battled you on a regular basis and had a constantly growing team, and he posed as much of a threat throughout the game as the other good rivals did. He's a prime example of how to have a nice character

The problem is that the only one who really seems like he genuinely cares about beating you is Blue. Silver is just a dick, Wally just wants to be friends, Barry and Cheren want to advance but not necessarily beat you, and I don't even remember anything about Hugh beyond unleashing rage. Calem/Serena sort of does, at least, care about winning, but only because s/he doesn't understand why s/he always loses.

Everytime I saw Trevor and Tierno I wanted to just turn my DS off. They were just aggravating. Annoying to look at and what they said was incredibly irritating. Also, why the fuck were they on stage with you at the end? Shauna helped in some way I guess, and Serena helped, but T and T literally did fuck all. They didn't do a damn thing.

Change his attitude if you want but a rival should be pushing me/beating me, if anything a rivals team level should averaged around your single highest pokemon.

These friendly rivals are a joke, would rather have a friendly rival who I battle to become pokemon league champion than a friendly rival who helps me beat Team Flare.

We challenge each other all the time. And since we're not fags with perfect IV and EV trained mons it's hella fun. Plus we use some weird ass Pokemon. Actually beat his last dude with a ditto today. Sent a shout out saying SMELL YA LATER
