So, I've not played a Pokémon game since Emerald. Ideally I'd like to play through gen IV and V before Gen VI but I think I'd prefer to play X or Y now whilst the buzz is at its highest. Will I miss out on much by skipping IV and V for now? Will they suck dick if I go back to play them after X or Y?

Slightly related, would you guys recommend a 3DS or 3DS XL? Money isn't too much of an issue for me.
