he's right about all those characters being terrible, but they're far from a game-ruining experience, especially since they fade into the background once you defeat the e4.

honestly most of the list just seems to be the same gripes that everyone's experiencing blown way out of proportion

There are definitely reasons to denounce X and Y, but those are pretty bad reasons.

The art style is not anymore "inconsistent" than it has been in past games. In fact, the reason it's taken so long to get 3D models is because they were picky about the Pokemon models looking like Sugimori's art. Which, for the most part, are pretty damn accurate with a few exceptions, such as the thickness of Aggron's model, or Venusaur's small plant-to-body ratio, but those are nitpicks.
They have a very similar coloring and shading style (with the two layered cell shading that you often see), incredibly accruate colors, and even an outline to make it look more like Sugimori. Including the artwork for trainer models isn't that crazy of an idea.

The chibi models for the overworld I think were done pretty damn well considering their goals, and the only real part that they didn't do so well on was the larger scale models. Don't know if a different team worked on those, but aside from accurate textures (such as the eyes), they didn't scream that art style.
Also, people wanting janky 2D sprites are living in the past. 2D can be done beautifully, but Gamefreak's entire art direction team is just not talented and cohesive enough to make it work.

69 is a bit of a letdown, but I can forgive that. Not only is this their first real 3D Pokemon game, but Gamefreak had to go and make models for each and every previous pokemon.

I expect a higher number next gen. Maybe not a huge number, but still.
