So now that everything has settled down and the games been out for more than a week; I just got my new (used) 3ds. I have every gen and will be getting either x or y. Can someone persuade me to which side I should consider?

You can get all other Pokemon anyway by trades.

It really boils down to what legendary and Mewtwo/Charizard mega you want. Exclusives don't matter at all, I found. The GTS is accessible from the menu, and you can type in what Pokemon you want rather than having to have seen it in the past games. Getting Clauncher in Y took me all but 5 minutes by putting up a Skrelp.
