It's attack stats are still relatively low and it's fragile as fuck.

Priority Fighting-type moves destroy it since they can hit it before it change with Protean.

Its defenses are garbage, so even if it changes typing to avoid getting smacked with super effective hits it's not difficult to kill. If you suspect your opponent will keep switching types around to fool with you then forget about SE attacks and go for surefire neutral damage.

Sic a dragon type on it. There is no way for it to turn to a steel or fairy type and it does not have the defenses to stand for long.

I don't know, do these guys normally run ice beam? If not, then most dragons could handle it just fine. Hell, even with ice moves, Kingdra checks it just fine.

Sufficient bulk (fairly easy, actually) allows you to smash him on the counterattack, and priority allows you to outspeed him if he's not ready for it.

Additionally, once you know his moveset certain pokemon on your team may be able to fight him with impunity.

He's most dangerous if he's allowed to live into the late game, where your pokes are probably already bruised and his STAB coverage will be enough to finish you off.

The ability is only any good because of the STAB.

And they split a great deal of his stat total into even attack/special attack so that he'd be frail and not too damaging on the attack.

Kecleon is the other pokemon who gets Protean.

Is it possible for Kecleon to use Protean for defensive purposes? Especially since it has 120 base Sp Def which is pretty surprising to me.

Even with super effective and them a little roughed up.

And if he does not kill in 1 hit, he is dead.
Basically guaranteed.
I get that it would allow him to break the mold in terms of types you'd expect from him, but he's already got pretty damn good coverage, I don't see the point in risking a weaker move in this case.

I think it's a matter of taste.
You can take the HP if you're willing to sacrifice some damage for additional coverage
Or you can take a normal move for more damage, but slightly less coverage

I'll personally stick with the damage because I've seen exactly what happens when a greninja does not OHKO. It dies, instantly.

Destiny Bond is not Priority, and literally the only pokemon fast enough to use it would be Mega Gengar.

And Perish Song is only 3 turns and Greninja can just U-turn or switch out on the 3rd turn.

So whats the best nature and EV spread for this guy? People keep mentioning shadow sneak and U-Turn but those are physical moves and most greninja builds I've seen advise special over physical. If you're running modest or timid, I seriously doubt physical STAB 40BP is gonna get you anywhere.

The number one build is Timid, because you want to be the fastest and use all special attacks.

Hydro Pump/Ice Beam/Grass Knot/Dark Pulse/Extrasensory

Any 4 of those 5 and you're golden. Hydro Pump and Ice beam are usually mandatory though.

Modest for special, hasty for physical. Either movepool presents some good possibilities.

This match up happens frequently. You can't go online without 31 IV's in Speed and a speed+ nature.

I don't know if I would design a pokemon's stats around a single situation (Greninja vs Greninja) as opposed to general preparedness (more damage mopping up with him against virtually anything else), but that's just me.

Infernape defined gen IV as a sweeper in a big way.

Empoleon's 11 resistances allowed it to do some impressive work.

They've been weakened since then by balance changes and powercreep, but they were definitely a huge deal in their heyday.

There are perks to the physical set.

U-turn allows him to get out before it gets too hot. Shadow sneak to play the immunities if a fighting type comes knocking. That sorta thing.

Special is better for his straight damage, but physical could definitely be used well too, especially since a lot of people probably wouldn't be ready for it.

You've got two Fairy type moves there son, Pixelate makes Hyper Voice Fairy. Replace either one with Focus Blast or Hidden Power Fire to counter pesky steel types.
