Breeding pokemon is just like real life selective breeding of animals. You breed for the best traits ie always use the pokemon with best potential out of their generation and breed them for the next generation It also helps if you have the Destiny Knot and some dittos from the friend safari

>>15028233 I have 100 friends even from before getting the game, and none have a ditto, so I just said fuck it, there is no fucking way.
So I just keep breeding gastlys that have "above average" potential until I get "relatively superior", and then I should eventually get "outstanding" or whatever the next rank is?
I thought IVs were completely random?

I'll try to explain OP.. IVs are random when you encounter a wild pokemon or hatch an egg, so getting semi-perfect IVs on past Gens was hard as shit. What people would do is catch a bunch of pokemon, check their IVs using Pokegen (Online IV checker) and then breed the two that have at least one IV of 31 so that their offspring would get an IV of 31 in that same stat. TL;DR- It was a pain and almost nobody did it. However in THIS gen, pokemon you encounter on someone's Friend Safari are GUARANTEED to have two IVs of 31. So let's say I want an Eevee with perfect IVs in everything but Attack (Because I want a Special Sweeper). I need to find someone online that has Eevee in his Friend Safari, catch a bunch, and then check them with the guy you're talking about. If I get an Eevee with perfect IVs in Speed and Special Attack, get another one with perfect IVs in HP and Defense and breed them with one of them holding a Destiny Knot, it is likely that a hatched Eevee will have perfect IVs in Speed, Sp Atk, HP, and Def. Then I go catch another Eevee with perfect IVs in Sp Def and breed it with mine until I get one with 31 IVs in everything except Attack.

You still pass on all the great IVs with Destiny Knot. Give it to the Froakie with perfect IVs, and if the Jap Ditto has a nature you want, then give it an everstone. Then start breeding your ass off and eventually you'll get a shiny with a good nature and 5 perfect IVs. A glorious abomination.

But the only stats you ever really need are Speed and HP, and the latter is incredibly situational "being at an odd number of HP so you can switch into stealth rocks twice and live" type of things. Your Garchomp with 500 attack isn't going to fail to OHKO the Infernape with 100 defense and 100 HP using Earthquake. So having 497 Attack instead won't really matter much in the long run. And that Infernape has no chance of surviving that earthquake even with 131 HP and 131 defense instead of just 100 each stat because no investment. However, if they had the same base speed and your Garchomp was a single point slower, you'd lose and die to Infernape's ice punch every single time.
Maybe you'll run into like, a single instance of something surviving with like 2 HP left, but that's a situation that barely happens once every like, 50 matches or so at best. And usually you can't even tell if that would've KO'd without the investment or it was all blamed on RNG fucking you over giving you a bad multiplier for that attack anyway.

Celebi can, however, have 7 weaknesses, the most of any Pokemon in existence, including a few 4x weaknesses.
Entei can't shoot Volcanos. In fact, it's worse at using fire moves than Salamence, a "non-legendary" Pokemon.
What is even the mindset around legendaries? Is it just people being uninformed not looking at the actual data of how, until HG/SS events, Entei's strongest fire move was Fire Fang? How Articuno is defensive, but starts most battles with 50% of its health gone? What do I even have to say about things like Regigias?
