What if the strange souvenir is actually Hoopa? It certainly looks spooky and weird enough to have such a name and be Ghost/Psychic.

Mew comes from South America, but that didn't stop us from getting it in PokeJapan. We're going to take another boat halfway around the world to get this legendary if we have to, damn it.

It's entirely possible for Pok?mon native to a different region to show up in a different generation. Murkrow and Houndour, for example, are native to everywhere except Kanto, Riolu and Lucario aren't native to Sinnoh, etc.

Actually Mew's dna samples were just found in south america. Doesn't mean it originates or lives there

I would personally prefer for this to be a new region. Makes the wait and the fantasy that much more alluring.

What kind of facility did he mean? What town was he referring to? What's so special about the Champion?

Plus, the figurine almost evokes something Tropical or Mesoamerican.

The Hikers words pretty much confirm another region. But to me the item looks like it belongs in rituals, so South America, Central America, or Louisiana/Florida areas are great possibilities

Read the journals. Mew was found and captured in South America, Guyana in particular. It's somewhat implied Mew might have appeared to Fuji because of his kind heart.

The DNA sample stuff was just something the anime came up with.

My bet is on Louisiana because as it has French influence, its Pokemon counterpart could have influence from Kalos which is why the backpacker went there.
