In my head he is only a flying type because of all of the big jumps and flips he does, being a luchadore and what not.
He probably just started as a fighting type and had to earn the flying type and his mask by fighting bird pokemon to the death as a child.
Those that survive the trial earn their mask and get to go on their adventure. The others aren't so lucky and are better of dead, since a luchadore is nothing without his mask.
