Before Pokéballs and even the ball form of Apricoco shells, people used pic related if they needed to put a Pokémon into stasis. The time difference between Cameran / Neuschwanstein and Kalos / Versailles is around 150 years, so even those crystals weren't probably around at that time and people relied more on training their Pokémon as shown in Conquest.
There probably wasn't any "revive" back then neither and so Pokémon probably died much more regularly. Also the lack of Stasis abilities like the Pokéball mean that a fainted / beaten Pokémon could not be stabilized in any way to bring it to a safe place.

The story would have been so much better if Team Flare and AZ showed up more often, maybe with recurring boss fights, and more hints about the war and Team Flare's plans. Instead we got the dumbass group of friends and a shoehorned mega evolution plot that didn't tie into the story at all.

Floette didn't know the revival needed pokemon souls in the first place, people often make that mistake and think it left for that reason. The Floette only left after AZ nuked the region.

It's fucking dark when you consider Team Flare activating the weapon.

The weapon kills surrounding Pokemon to power itself. Team Flare even forms a blockade and prevents you from going to the areas where its happening since they don't want a kid like you to witness it.

So if Lysandre's plan was to kill everyone except Team Flare since anyone close to the weapon becomes immortal

And right as he sets the weapon off he says he will punish MC by making him immortal in a world devoid of other life

Technically the weapon still went off, even if the blast was turned back on itself.
Does this mean Lysandre / MC / Rival / Shauna are now immortal?

Will this be a factor in future storylines

I don't know, I think always beating your rival and shit, kind of makes it hard to actually call them your rival. Same goes for AZ. I loved his story though, wish it was the main focus. ;_;

You should have battled him AFTER his Floette came back
And his Floette should have been level 100.
It should have been a battle you were supposed to lose, and then you can rebattle him in post game to get some kind of reward (and you get it early if you manage to beat him after the parade)

This, the story felt either really rushed or really influenced by suits who thought that it would scare away kiddies. It could have been a really amazing game if they'd really hammered down the themes of the parade scene and Kiseki's lyrics prior to actually seeing them.
