Or the "CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE" shit (which, while occasionally cool, were pretty shit as a whole). It was too much garbage, and unfortunately the generals got piled in with it and created a pretty harsh dichotomy between Pokemon fans and non-fans. Not to mention how glaringly autistic (and yes, I do mean literally, pattern-finding, number-crunching autistic) the competitive threads were. The good didn't outweigh the bad, and Pokemon needed to be contained (if you don't like quarantined, which is in this context essentially the same).
There was good, yes, but there was far more bad.
