Rookie and champion digimon usually look somewhat good and most of them probably could pass as pokemon if I didn't have the fact that they talk like humans on a regular basis according to the anime.

Once they go to Ultimate or Mega form though they pretty much go from good to "Lets just strap a shit load of guns and stuff on this"

In their setting that's not a BAD thing, though. Pokemon are more analogous to wild animals while Digimon are sapient data taking the form of talking monsters.

Not because digimon are badly designed, but because it doesn't fit pokemon's design.

And for the record, the only pokemon that even approach looking like digimon are the version legendaries for BW and BW2, particularly the Kyurem formes. But even then, only in some ways.
Frankly, I think the bigger issue is pokemon designs that look like neopets, of which there are too many.

Up to Champion forms, I tend to really love Digimon designs.
But once they start looking like people in costumes, I can't stand it.

Digimon designs are different enough for some people to be able to prefer one side over the other. I personally prefer Digimon, but the Pokemon games are infinitely superior which is why I'm here and a huge fan of the series.

I feel like Keramon could work as a Digimon. Maybe Dark / Fairy, or monotype Dark or something.

Most pokemon are based on animals, mythical animals and plants.

The acceptable exception to this are ghost pokemon but they are based on real life myths.

Most humanoid pokemon look weird but fighting types are particularly bad. Especially when they butcher a good looking animal design on the alter of humanoid design(I'm looking at you Blaziken).

You can instantly recognize psyduck is based on a duck and golduck is also based on a japanse monster.

Pikachu is clearly some kind of small rodent and I'll give you snorlax and the rest but hey are exceptions.

Hell even with those pokemon you can guess what their based on, but blaziken (without knowing it's prevo's) still doesn't look like a rooster at all.

Blaziken's beak looks a bit avian but that's it.

Nidoran's teeth make it look rodent like and the big ears bunny like.

Off course they used a lot of fantasy when designing nidoran but it's general shape is rabbit like.

B-but that's the point. Digimon draws a great deal from Toei's toku library, what with the recurring transformation phrases and all, and those shows typically escalate to large-scale fights with rubber-suit monsters.

Digimon just combines that formula with the mon genre. Not everyone prefers Megazord fights, and not everyone prefers Ultimate Digimon, but at least understand its purpose.

As a kid, I hated that Renamon didn't get a CG digivolution, but I realized it's because it simply wasn't as big as the other Digimon, and it would have looked weird.

Blocky characters work better in primitive CGI.

In 1998 CGI was still more expensive than cell animation for complex scenes like that. The thing is, Digital Monsters was trying to look computer-like and thus, used CGI transformations.

If it was cheaper, all transformations would have been CGI, but they only had a few, increasing with frequency each season as the cost:quality ratio tipped in their favour.

It's a fucking shame there are no good Digimang RPGs like the Pokemon games. Dusk and Dawn kinda sucked and I hated the hoops I had to jump through to evolve certain dgmun. Plus I hate not seeing the Digimon in battle... that shit irritates me.

Digimon designs are better than pokemon designs. I only play pokemon because the games are better. There are over a thousand pokemon when there are only over 700 pokenon and digimon are a lot stronger than pokemon which is why they have better designs.
