Talonflame is guaranteed OU. He checks A LOT of strong stuff including Blaziken, Lucario, and even Shaymin-fucking-S.

4x weak to sneaky pebbles doesn't matter when it kills itself in two attacks anyways(we're talking recoil from 100% damage, niggers). Also SR didn't stop Volcarona being OU either.

Cloyster and Tentacruel are good? This makes me happy. I'm just getting into the game and I want to put together a team that will take on OU.

I'm not positive about Talonflame. The allure there is obviously priority Brave Bird, but everything else seems iffy to me. That 80 Base Attack and 4x weakness to rock makes me think it will languish in UU but still see play in OU as a niche counter to certain Flying weak sweepers.

I think Tyrantrum will see OU play. It's high attack and bulk with access to some great moves will allow it to run multiple viable sets.

It's speed and attack stats beg for a choice scarf set with Stone Edge, Earthquake, Dragon Claw/Outrage, and Fire Fang. You could also drop Fire Fang for a boosting move (most likely Rock Polish but Hone Claw could be used for a wall breaker set in theory).

By maxing Attack and HP you could run a Choice Band set with the same attacks as the Scarf set. Dropping Fire Fang for Stealth Rock lets it run an aggressive support role for Hyper Offense teams. Substitute + 3 Attacks seems likely viable as well since it has such good coverage with its STABs plus Earthquake.

Hell, someone could probably make use of that 90Hp and 120 Def to make a support set with Stealth Rock, Dragon Tail, filler, though I don't see that set being very good with it's weaknesses to common physical attacking types like Fighting and Ground.

It's got great stats and a movepool that supports those stats. I'm thinking OU.

Talonflame will likely only get 1 /maybe/ 2 chances to come in. Yea, it has Roost but it's not like it has the bulk it would need to just constantly recover health in the face of getting beat on by the other team.

All of Talonflame's stats except speed are shitty and that 4x Rocks weakness doesn't help. Talonflame has Gale Wings, but that's it. It can't even make good use of Brave Bird with that mediocre attack stat.

I know it's not a Kalos mon, but what are the chances of Azumarill being OU this gen? In addition to the new Fairy typing, Belly Drum + Aqua Jet is now legal. I saw a cool strategy on Smogon that involved using a trapping move + Yawn to ensure at least one set up turn for Belly Drum.

Cloyster has the ability skill link which lets moves like rock blast and icicle spear hit 5 times. Couple that with shell smash and he's very potent.

Tentacruel is a bulky water type with rapid spin and access to toxic spikes, while also being able to remove toxic spikes on switch in.

Actually, I enjoy the tiers. It lets me use Pokemon I like that are weak as shit by staying in a tier where they're balanced with everyone else.

I'm not saying people won't use Talonflame in OU, but I really doubt it will be anything better than UU. People use lower tiered pokemon as niche counters all the time. It's just like people that used Quagsire and Shedinja as Kyogre counters.

I saw someone using an Unburden @ Fighting Gem Hawlucha with Power-up Punch that seemed to work really well.

Fighting Gem makes Power-up Punch do passable damage, and give you a +1 ATK +2 SPE boost in the same turn. Then they swept with Flying Press.

After B2/W2 Sandstorm and stall in general fell out of favor because of hyper offense. Smogon voted that Keldeo wasn't broken in the rain, I have a hard time believing that Excadrill would have been banned if suspect voting took place in August 2013.

Here's the scene. Your foe has Gengar out against something you don't want Gengar to be out against. You switch to Talonflame to counter it. Pointed stones dig into Talonflame. Gengar uses substitute on the switch. You attack and break the sub. Gengar attacks and KOs Talonflame. Alternately, you're revenge killing Gengar which means you don't switch into its attack or substitute, but it also means you just lost a pokemon and nothing is stopping Gengar from switching to any of the dozens of things that Talonflame doesn't counter.

Alakazam still nails Talonflame for huge damage on the switch even without hazards in play. This is 135 Special Attack against 78 Hp and 74 Special Defense.

If you need to do damage calcs to determine if +2 Lucario can OHKO Talonflame after Stealth Rock damage I don't know what to tell you.

For something to be a counter, it needs to be able to switch into a pokemon at full health and beat it one on one. Otherwise, Talonflame is a revenge killer that can only come in a handful of times due to huge weakness to Rock. Granted, it can revenge kill a few reall scary sweepers such as Blaziken, Keldeo lacking Aqua Jet, and Volcanora if you mess up and let them set up, but outside of those specific match ups Talonflame just does not have the stats to let it keep up.

OU/UU is one metagame with an arbitrary cutoff based on popularity, but pretty much everything in UU is viable in OU with correct teambuilding.

RU/NU is a completely separate metagame because pretty much everything in these tiers is outclassed by something in OU/UU. I like to think of RU being the functional equivalent of OU in this separate meta.

I'd say BL is more for Pokemon who suck at the Tier they're supposed to fit in. It's for Pokemon of no subtlety, generally ones who have straight upgrades. In most cases, being UU means nothing about their viability in OU. And sucking in OU isn't the thing that pushes pokemon into UU.

Honestly, it seems like it could be a fantastic revenge killer, maybe even the best in the tier. It can just plow through a ton of frailer things with priority brave bird, and hits hard enough to put a dent in a lot of bulkier pokemon too, especially those weak to its secondary stab. This is without even exploring the options of a swords dance set.

With all that said, I'm still not sure it will make OU. It's frail and has relatively few resistances. Weakness to stealth rock is huge, especially combined with its hit-and-run nature and proclivity for damaging itself. However, after this examination, I could definitely see it in OU.
