Fly is a bit of an arse being two turns though. Only in White and X have I done the game without a team 'mon having fly and that was due to already having several fire types on my team this time around

I certainly enjoyed being able to rotate different Pokemon for once. Only problem is that I almost didn't use my starter.

This. Surf is actually pretty decent, there's no reason you shouldn't use that or even Waterfall on appropriate mons.
