They're meant to be based on the main characters from Journey to the West, Sun Wukong and Zhu Bajie, they're supposed to be Chinese looking aesthetically.

I think people are capable of separating artistic design from underlying thematic design - for example, I love how Infernape references Journey to the West, but I just can't get behind what it looks like.

I view the Kami trio from Gen V the same way (though their horribleness was somewhat mitigated by their exponentially better B2/W2 designs which they should have just gone with tin the first place).

I don't really "hate" it that much, just... never really found it to be as interesting or engaging as most of the other starters. But then again, from a design perspective, it's competing with cannon turtle and fire-breathing dragon so it's not an entirely fair playing field.

But even beyond that, I actually really like Bulbasaur and Ivysaur - so what happened with this last stage? I think my main problem with it is how bizarrely wide its head (and therefore) mouth got.

And similar to that, Dragonite's another third stage that just made me sort of go "Huh?" when it popped up. Just like with Venusaur, I love the pre-evos but can't help but feel that the final stage is a weird-looking letdown.

I dislike every single starter evo in the fifth generation, and I have a hard time even choosing which one to pick at the start.

Grass evo design is weak, emboar is another fighter, and water evo is bad on so many levels that i lose respect for people who say it isn't that bad.

Gen 6 is cool all round but delphox and chesnaught could be better. gen 4 is cool, gen 3 is cool if you ignore the existence of mudkip. gen 2 is boring but not terrible, and gen 1 is cool as well. Over all, i'd say the starters i like the most as starters, not my favourites are the grass and water lines from gen 1 and gen 4, but blaziken is my favourite starter final evo, probably because i played gen 3 the most times.

4th gen starters are all viable.
Venusaur and Blastoise are also viable, Charizard sucks fucking dick and Talonflame outshines him. That's why he got two megaforms to stop his retarded sucking.
All of 2nd gen starters are worthless and terrible.
3rd gen has a shit grass starter, Blaziken used to suck, but got a broken ability and Swampert had a unique typing.
5th gen starters all suck shit.
6th gen only has Protean Greninja, while Chesnaught has a gimmick ability against Mega Gengar, and Delphox is fucking worthless.

Mienshao has nothing to fucking do with Karate or Kung Fu you fuckhead, it's based off whip fighting.

The problem is that GF couldn't be assed to make new moves for it based around it using its arms as whips so instead they gave it a standard fighting type moveset (Hi Jump Kick, Drain Punch, Fake Out) and threw in U-Turn and Bounce to fuck with people. It has literally no relation in any way to Mienfoo, which IS inspired by Kung Fu

Delphox is still probably more viable than Charizard. It isn't a whole lot of competition but Delphox is probably one of the better fire starters.

There is something appealing about a dopey pokemon that wrecks monsters with unconventional tactics.

Some pokemon are also just memorable. There is nothing special about Barbaracle's design, if anything it looks like a bad romhack, but its reveal after Binacle was just hilarious. Same with Goomy's big bold "DRAGON" label. Pokemon can be liked for reasons other than how "cool" they look.

Why is the Pokémon fanbase so fucking spoiled? No, that would be 02. Frontier is easily one of the better ones.

It is the only one that even comes close to emulating the "adventure" part of Adventure, and up until the Royal Knights arc, is an incredibly solid and balanced show. The same can't be said for the likes of 02 or even Savers and Xros Wars.

Digimon designs were a fucking mess from the start. They didn't have a distinct "look" to them like Pokemon, they looked like generic anime monsters with shit all over them. The mergers weren't that strange because we already had digimon who looked like that, the kids were just inside them now.

It's like Pokemon is LOTR and Digimon is Warcraft. Magical steam robots from space aren't that weird in Warcraft, but in LOTR it's just fucking wrong.

But the funniest part was the ad. It literally said "Move over, Pokemon, now comes Digimon!"

The only distinct thing about them is giant fucking feet and hands, and even that's inconsistent. Take any generic JRPG enemy and they could pass off as a Digimon.

They're certainly nowhere near as distinct as Pokemon, which is why changes aren't as striking.
