This is pretty obvious bait though. There's some stupid claims in there, especially the MLP one. Just a minute of research would show that Gen V started before that show started airing.

Apart from that, it completely disregards that Pokemon are getting more detailed because of the hardware's quality getting better. And they only selected the best looking sprites. Pic related.

Actually, I think the main issue the change in artstyle, not the new pokemon.

And I agree, I miss Sugimori's water colour style from Gen 1, and I miss all of the pokemon being mysterious dangerous monsters. Now they are kinda cuddly and non threatening,
Seriously, when is the last time that Lapras actually looked like something that could wreck your shit?

The feel of the artwork, and the design of new pokemon has changed since Gen 1, and I think that is the real problem.

I know that personally, there are a few designers that I want to kick in the fucking knee. Cause some of the new pokemon post Gen 2 just look fucking terrible, as in, they shouldn't even be in pokemon.

Like, seriously, whats up with all of the pokemon that look like they were made by the dude that does astro boy?

You clearly have never seen a real poodle in your life.

Firstly: poodles get pretty shaggy if they aren't groomed daily and/or you live somewhere humid.

Secondly: Poodles with shorter tails have had their tails docked (cut off at a certain length at birth). The original purpose for this was to prevent the tail from freezing and snapping off when they dive into cold waters on duck hunts. This is typically not done to poodles if not bred for show or hunting.

The only thing I agree with and wholeheartedly support is the claim that the sugimori art is just not Pokemon anymore. It's just a personal opinion but the watercolored mons looked incredibly more like Pokemon than the generic shit art today. Not like it makes a real difference, but I guarantee a lot of people wouldn't think some new mons looked like shit if they were drawn in the original style.

There are about the same amount of pro and cons for this argument. Pokemon aren't defined simply by their Dex Number. Which the "personality" in the 1st gen disregards and displays pokemon always the way they are supposed to. While in actuality pokemon each have their own individual personality which is independent from which pokemon they are. There are shy pikachu's and there are outgoing pikachu's etc.
So from that view the neutral stances seem more fitting in the way that they don't make the pokemon look pre-defined. They just give a certain scale from how to imagine a standard of that pokemon without any extra factors calculated in. Otherwise i.e. you'd always be biased to believe all bulbas are badasses just cause in their artwork they look like one.

But whoever it is that was trying to emulate his style and cram it into pokemon is a jackass.
The concept art, and general mood of pokemon hasn't been the same since Gen 1, it was kinda still there in Gen 2 mind you, but it was entirely lost in favour of something less mysterious and more exciting and non-threatening in Gen 3 and beyond.

The worst part is, GF is aware of what pokemon used to be, just look at that new OVA based on Gen 1. Its rad as fuck, and they do understand that pokemon were at one time rad as fuck monsters that would bite your shit, and that mewtwo was some insane as fuck genetic abomination.

Now pokemon just seem entirely non threatening to me, and I blame it on the way that the artists decide to draw them.

They should really go back to when each version had an exclusive style, except this time make one game have everything look more like monsters and use water colour shaders, and then the other can be cutesy and non threatening

List me just one pokemon in Gen I that was an unliving object for example that was given life through its transformation into a pokemon design.

The Unfezant with the mask is male. Male pheasants have red feathers in their faces and brighter colors. The Unfezant without the mask is female. Female pheasants have darker colors and don't have the red feathers the male has.

I think one of the bigest shifts in the artwork style has been the eyes. most of the gen 1 pokes look pissed.
A decent majority (I counted 68) all have the same triangle eyes, and there are quite a few more with limited variations on that.

The only thing I agree with is the concept art. Sugimori's work on the Pokemon's artwork has dipped in quality quite a bit. They do look a lot more flat and boring than in the past.
But yeah, the image is mostly just shitty b8.

I don't think they clash. I always use a variety of Pokemon from different generations in my games and I don't think they don't belong together or anything. I can tell they're part of the same series.

i never realized this but that's exactly how i feel. there is no mystery to the new pokemon at all. it really felt like you were conquering the elements in the old games

I quit following new pokemon after 3rd ggen, 4th gen just got ridiculous.

First and second gen were best, the quality assurance in artwork started dropping in 3rd gen, but went out the door completely in 4th gen.

Yes, nostalgia is a factor to consider - but quality assurance is something to consider too. The ganeplay dynamics have improved, but the design and lack of direction of the new pokemon is less than satisfactory.

There were some below average designs in first gen yes. I'll still pick tangela over shroomish any day of the week though.

The sense of adventure is fading, no longer are you exploring prehistoric caves to find long lost aerodactyls, instead you're searching for the legendary toaster pokemon that can take every type. Which came first, the refrigerator or the rotom? Furthermore, why the fuck do refridgerators even exist with ice pokemon around? I'm not going to think too hard about this because, yes, its a cartoon fantasy world - but they make it too easy.

That's not to say that there are any shortage of legendaries in the newer generations. So much actually that electabuzz may as well be more of a mythical pokemon than the rare ones you're expected to hype over. That since of mewtwo being an all powerful psychic pokemon is cheap now, nostalgia is the only thing keeping it alive really. The legendary birds? cool. The legendary dogs? awesome. The legendary golems? uhhh ones an icecube and the other is a boulder but hey - cool riddles. Now I have to look at a fucking bulbapedia article just to figure out which trio of legendaries is intended to be the current generations designated set.

I don't run anything past 3rd gen even though I know more powerful type combinations exist, and third gen is really just metagross or salamence, I played that generation to the end and did not enjoy it in the same sense as crystal or yellow. It was 'okay', and that enthusiam fades more as the number of pokemon exceeds the number of moves.
