Though, if I stop and think about it, with what the backpacker said about you'll see it 'in due time' makes me think it will just be an alternate reality/paradox/distortion world that's going to become accessible through DLC, as opposed to the popular theory which is the next game.
Honestly, we all know XY were rushed. GF wanted to jump on the 3D thing, and while it's a welcome upgrade, it's far from polished or complete. What I am hoping at this point is that moving to 3DS platform will allow each iteration of the pokemon games to live a little longer before the next installment. with the DS's they've been able to extend the life of the games with events and whatnot. Now with the possibility of DLC adding whole new portions to the game (or at the very least unlocking them) we could XY(maybe Z/remakes) last for quite a while before the next gen is released.
This allows GF to take their time on the next games and fully flesh out both the technical (fully 3D, more/better animations) and the story side of things.
All-in-all, while X and Y may not quite have been the games that everyone was hoping they'd be, the future looks very bright. Or, at least to me it does.
