How can I make this guy work in OU?

I really like this set

Avalugg @ Lefties / Custap Berry
Sturdy
252 HP / 252 Def
0 Spe IV

- Avalanche
- Gyro Ball / EQ
- Recover
- Curse

What would be a good defensive core to build around?

Avalugg is weak to Fire, Steel, Fighting and Rock and has low SpD

I can't think of a single pokemon resisting all these 4 types, Tentacruel resists 3, but it's defenses are kinda mediocre

p-pls help

Tentacruel might be a good choice actually, if they want to kill your Physical Wall they'll most likely bring Special Attackers.

it doesn't matter that he's ice-type, you don't need resistances to do well, just look at Chansey / Blissey

besides, Avalugg takes special hits better than Chansey takes physical hits, and has a decent move pool on top of it.

I don't think any pokemon can match it's ability to check physical Dragons, Gyarados, Mamoswine and Landorus

Avalugg's not going to be tanking anything with that typing. Just give him

-Avalanche
-Recover/Stone Edge

I think the assault vest might also be a good idea for an item. That would give him an effective base special defense of 69, which is respectable enough with a base HP of 95 to take one hit from a special attacker, as long as it's not extremely powerful or super effective.

yeah I thought so as well, but then you have to play it with Calm nature and 252 HP / 252 SDef imo

Jellicent would also work, resists Fire and Steel and is immune to water, fighting and normal

then you could build a 3rd member around it like Chesnaught who completely resists quake edge, grass but is weak to fairy, bug and poison

considering this Tentacruel might be a better choice then Jellicent, but since most bug, poison and fairy users are physical he needs points in Defense :|

Avalugg has 30 base hp AND 45 def more than Skarmory

he's more bulky than full defensive Regirock while only taking around 12 % more dmg from special attacks

I don't think he's that bad honestly

Still bad enough that you don't want to plan on keeping him out long or trying to boost with curse. Best strategy would be to save him for mid to late game and then send him in against a physical attacker, then try to KO that or predict the switch out. He's bulky, but he's no tank so you have to be very careful when you bring him out.

if you get rid of their Special attackers he basically wins you the game alone

he also can hit things like Heatran for 4x or put a dent on pretty much everything with Avalanche

Explosion really isn't that good since the gen V nerf. Phantom force is garbo. Seed bomb for explosion if explosion doesn't work out very well.

Swap the Defence IV's for Spc Defence. His regular defence is already stupidly high enough to invest nothing into it. Don't bother with berries, get an Assault Vest. An Avalugg with Max Spc Def ev's and an Assault Vest can have ~200 Defence and ~140 Spc Defence at Level 50, which is more than workable.
It's never going to outspeed anything, so don't bother trying. Earthquake/Gyro Ball, Recover.

A Fire Blast from Garchomp one shots the fucking thing, no it doesn't. If someone sends in a special sweeper, you get it the fuck out and switch to something like Blissey or Carbink.

Yeah, no. You forgot about Chansey/Blissey's monstrous HP.

Anyway, I like this guy. For defnsive/utility sets, I like mono-attacking, @Lefties, Hail/Recover/Rapid Spin/(EQ or Avalanche).

Something I've been wanting to try is a Rock Polish set, but I don't know if Rock Polish makes himout outspeed anything (it probably doesn't, meaning this set is utter crap, but anyway). It would go @Weakness Policy, Rock Polish/Avalanche/EQ/coverage (Crunch?). Have a Wobbufett or something similar Encore something that shouldn't hurt you too bad.

You do realize those two have only one weakness and an immunity. This guy has FOUR weaknesses and NO immunity, along with a shitty Sp. Defense and not nearly the same HP stat.
