I haven't played a Pokemon game since G/S/C.
I hear of people having Pokemon on 5th and 6th generation transfered from their 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation games. How is this done from the Gameboy Advanced to the Nintendo DS.

The DS has a slot for GB Advance games and you can import your mons from there to the DS games. You can not trade Pokémon from the first two generations, because they are not linked to the third. Otherwise it is possible to trade between generations. (Mostly only one-way.)

No, you can only get from 3 to 4 to 5 to 6.

First and Second work with each other, but nothing beyond that. In fact zero GB/C games have any compatibility with any GBA games. So don't blame gamefreak for that, that applies to all franchises. But it is amazing how many generations we are able to transfer across now.

There are remakes for the first two generations from which you can trade (FireRed and LeafGreen / HeartGold and SoulSilver). And like in the original Gen 2, a lot of Pokémon from previous generations apear in the other games as well.

You know, having not played since Gen III really fucking bites.

I have to transfer all of my most precious shit from LeafGreen, to a friend of mine's SoulSilver. Through the apparently extremely tedious Pal Park.

From there, I have to transfer them, hopefully in a less tedious way, to another friend of mine's White 2.

And from THERE, once the new app comes out, I can transfer them to my X.

Pal Park was absolute hell in DPP, but fortunately they removed the 6-a-day rule in HGSS. It's still very tedious especially when catching legendaries or rare Pokémon though.

Poké Transfer is more like a minigame. It can be annoying at first if you fail to catch them all, but with some practice you should be able to move all your boxes across.

You need a phat DS for Pal Park and 2 of any DS/3DS type for Poké Transfer. Fortunately the Box can be done on a single system.

Luckily, my friend with White 2 has both a DS phat AND a 3DS, while my friend with SoulSilver has a DS lite, soon to likely be getting a 3DS XL.

It's all going to be just a matter of patience and shit. I'll pick my six most beloved nigs, go through it all the way to X, and see exactly how many of them would be worth salvaging.

Sure, once the Box comes out, I'll easily be able to replace every mon from III, but it's more about the time I put into them, the emotional attachments I have to the little pieces of data.

On another note, I'm still baffled that GF has NO WAY of directly transferring past gens. Granted, I'm in no way an expert on coding and shit, but come on.

They know how to connect III to IV.

They know how to connect IV to V.

They know how to connect V to VI.

Would it really be impossible to find shortcuts there?

Transferring from III was only possible because of the GBA-DS link feature in older DS models which was probably implemented solely because of Pokémon(there are very few games which actually utilize this on DS: notable other examples are PMD blue and Advance Wars)

IV to VI would probably be possible, but gen IV might not have been programmed with this in mind. Perhaps a Download Play method could be used like it did for IV to V, but who knows.

Not sure how it's done legit, but I played gen 3 and gen 1 remake on PSP and transferred them over via emulators to gen 4, then to gen 5 via pokecheck

They haven't made anything since that could read data from GBA games. If they ever release the Gen III games on the Eshop they could make them compatible with the Box, but Nintendo still has no plans of releasing GBA games on the Eshop apart from the few Ambassador games.
