Why are double battles considered the competitive standard in official, real life pokemon tournaments?

All of the local and regional tournaments demand double battles, especially the Official Nintento Sponsored ones for some reason.

What changed, and why??

Singles is not balanced, it is purely based around who counters who.

That said, 2's is more about synergy and tactics.

Because a lot of the time, singles is setting up hazards and weather, and then having a switch in, switch out contest for 5 minutes, until something is confident that they can predict a switch, and attack.

In doubles, everyone is forced to attack frequently, as switching has 2X's the risk.

And this isn't a new thing. They've been doing it since at least Gen IV. don't know about before then. Same reason WiFi singles usually only have you use 3 pokes.

then why are all of the final competitor teams literally just the same "pseudo" legendaries over and over?

i'd much rather have the relatively diverse meta of singles team compositions compared to every team using the big faggot genies from gen 5 with heatran and cresselia

In doubles most people calculate their EV's and stuff to be able to survive or kill certain threats and other stuff example: "oh if I put this much in Sp.D then I'd be able to survive a Draco Meteor from Latios with this much health remaining" or "oh if I only put this much in Attack and/or speed rather than just maxing it then I can outspeed or kill certain threats while still having room to EV other stats"
In singles people just max what they think is the pokemons best stats with no calculation at all

Double battles involve the same long term thinking single battles have, however you must think short term to get to the long term without letting your opponent set up. Also predicting and switch is twice has hard due to your opponent being able to predict and kill two of your pokemon in one turn.

Being forced to choose 4 out of your 6 pokemon puts much of the preparing into the before the battle even begins, making team building more difficult as well.

I find myself only really running 252/252 most of the time because it's called for by the metagame. If you run 248 speed, you get outsped by the guy who's running 252; when you run moderate attack EVs, you get walled by pokemon with maxed out defenses.

Except that's wrong about singles. I just did some complex stat calcs with someone else to build something bulky enough while having enough attack to counter M-Blaziken, and it sure as fuck wasn't 252/252. It was along the lines of 136/196/68/108 to allow for it to do those things while being able to outspeed other things after an increase of speed by 1 stage.

Most people go for the simple 252/252 because they simply need to punch hard enough to ensure they kill everything/block hard enough that they ensure they don't die to anything/go fast enough that they aren't randomly getting outsped.

I said 252/252 is a bad idea. Calculating will always be more optimal. The point I was trying to get across is that most of the time the singles players that I see never really give it much thought. They tend to just max things. I just think it's a more common thing for singles players to do

The only reason people can put those calculations there is because Doubles is incredibly centralized around a few top threats like Cress and TTar. This happens in Singles as well but it's less prevalent since Sneaky Stones, Leftovers, and frequent switching make damage calcs much less predictable. Thus it becomes more about hitting fast and hitting hard.

A 252/252 would have been superior for this pokemon, but instead I had to cut into it's ability to sweep in order to allow it to survive a specific threat a reasonable amount of the time.

252/252 is the smartest starting point, since max is better for general potential. You only get into odder setups when you find specific threats you need to beat, or find that you don't need some of those extra EVs and can put them somewhere else.

252 is generally best for speed anyways so you ensure you beat everything in your speed tier.

What I was trying to get across was the 252/252 idea doesn't work well in doubles at all. I know it doesn't work for singles once you get to the better players, but the thing I was trying to get across is the EV spread is much more critical in doubles than in singles.

You can take a 252/252 in against scrubs in doubles and do fine, and do the same against scrubs in singles.

The only time that the 252 will be fine in EITHER is when 252/252 is the actual optimum. The only reason for it to be more important in doubles is because smaller playerbase and therefore less scrubs to grind on.

In my esperience, doubles allows for a wider variety of strategies and pokemon to use. It's not like in singles where you have to be prepared to counter everything and switch forever, you can also exploit tactics based around how well your pokemon can work together and control the field. Granted I pretty much ONLY play doubles so I'm probably talking out my ass.
I run a hilarious Rain team that would get me murdered in singles, but has done wonders in doubles

I just watched some double battles from that vgc tournament (yes, I agree, the winner didn't deserve it) and now I can understand why game freak keeps putting so much emphasis on double/triple battling tactics. I see shit like helping hand, plus/minus abilities, wide guard, flower veil, etc. and just think "these are all useless." Guess everything has its use somewhere though.

I just prefer the simplicity of singles. Don't have to throw protect on every one of your goddamn pokemon.

So you're just going to go ahead and give up one of your pokemon because of spore. I guess that makes spore a 100% accurate OHKO move and you're totally ok with that. What if Breloom just switches away, waiting to come in on something faster than it for more spore carnage? Well you either eat spore or switch and that pokemon eats spore. At least this gen it's a little better with grass types being immune.

Either you switch and get spored more, or you let the sleeping pokemon die and switch in your Breloom counter. Then something magical happens. Breloom fucking switches out and stays in its pokeball until your Breloom counter is dead. It's not pursuit weak, so you aren't touching that fucker if he decides to switch.

Sleep clause was necessary. Without it spore would have had to have been banned itself.

The only issue is that those benefits for doubles they keep on putting in mess up balance in singles. Like they keep on making more and more powerful entry hazards and not nerfing the ones we have, simply because they want an entry hazard good enough for doubles (which won't happen, since doubles doesn't have enough switching to afford it).

At the least they improved defog so entry hazards are less of an issue.

Infiltrator is going to become doubles absolute favorite ability. I see now why they fucked over Chandelure's hidden ability. And actually, shadow tag was amazing on chandelure in Doubles.

Trick Room/Imprison/Protect/Attack

You have imprison to fuck up trick room teams and protect spam, trick room to fuck up non-trick room teams, protect for protection, and an attack for attacking.

With shadow tag, they also can't switch out to adjust for threats. Also, infiltrator doesn't hit through protect.

Infiltrator was designed to be a debuff to chandelure without making it too bad.

Speed-Sapping Substrate doesn't NEED a lot of switching. Its full effect is applied upon switch-in every time, so it doesn't get anything if the opponent switches any more often; they're still at the exact same -1 Speed.

I like both doubles and singles.
- Doubles allows you to pull off hilarious strategies and use pokemon that are less popular or rarely seen due to niche movesets and abilities. I'm already working on a team with Friend Guard VivillionPlus its the official tournament format so its worthwhile to learn it and play it.
- Singles makes greater use of entry hazards and arguably places greater emphasis on switch prediction and boosting moves.

Though I think I am biased to doubles simply because a lot of things are more viable there. Weakness Policy for instance is damn good in singles but fucking CHRAZY in doubles.

On average at best you'll get 1 turn of free slapping. More often than not, not even 1 turn.

Sleep breaks after 1 turn super easy now in multiplayer matches, out of all the times I've slept enemy pokes, very rarely has it lasted 3 turns or more. Majority has been next turn wakeups making the Sleep about as effective as a simple stall turn where no one gained anything from it (unless one side has Speed Boost/Moody).

You can't really take your personal experience with sleep as a marker for what it is (It's been 1-3 turns possible since last gen), simply because you've been getting more early rises does not necessarily mean early rises are more common overall. We'll have to wait for a datamine for that. If it is an average of 1 turn asleep, that may change things; but the clause will still be under heavy research for that case.

Dunno, I haven't played seriously since gentoo (not a gentooer, it is my favourite gen but the recent ones are also enjoyable), and singles games could take over an hour if both people knew what they were doing. Somewhere on Smogon I think there is still a thread with a singles battle in gen 2, with both players running top tier teams. It went for around 400 rounds of battle.
Now apparently the later gens have far less stall at a competitive level (due to arena trap, toxic spikes, rest talk not being as strong and so on), but a high level battle between stall teams could possibly go nearly as long as that.

I only played it once but had one close game where my friend Max Revived his Chandelure and almost took down my last half HP Empoleon but I managed to X SpDef 6 it and tanked the hits and won the battle.

Rotation though is something that really brings in a twist to singles. Stuff like entry hazards aren't a problem in rotations, plenty of prediction is required and stuff like Trick Room work fabulously.

Double battles are shit, unabalanced, and unfun.

Let me explain why, first of all, pokemon was made to be BASED around ONE ON ONE POKEMON BATTLES

That's literally the very foundation of the game itself, gen III fucked this idea up beyond belief by throwing in double battles and fucking the game over completely

There is no "strategy" to double battles, it isn't faster paced except for when some fucking cunt face uses earthquake and the other is flying type or something, yeah, great strategy, I can tell a lot of work went into it.

It's stupid, it's pointless, it doesn't require you to think at all except the first 5 seconds where you go "uh gee out of my FUCKING EIGHT moves who should attack who?" It's rediculous and it breaks the game itself, god have mercy and maybe we can get it fucking banned or at least let the spergs who somehow enjoy it do so at their own fucking lunch tables and not ruin the god damn metagame.
