Crits are, largely, just single-player flavor. They're in pvp because some strategies involve exploiting a high crit chance, but mostly they're the thing that makes players go "FUCKING HAX" and get pissed because a coin toss just cost them a match.
I get why GF nerfed them.
Actually GF seems more prepared to minimize the effects of chance this gen; never-miss defog, roar, whirlwind, and never-miss toxic on poison types, it seems like their way of offering viable counters to evasion-boosting. Same with the crit nerf, we've also got nuzzle which is never-miss thunder wave
Though sleep is now random turn length again so I don't know.
