I never actually saw the enormous dislike towards Hoenn until /vp/ was first made, I never, ever saw it anywhere else. So to me, it's actually quite the opposite. Where did all the people who dislike gen 3 so much come from? When I was in school when this came out, I never met a single person who disliked the games, everyone thought they were fun.

Gen 3 was objectively the worst if you played Pokemon before or after it and could see it's flaws with clear vision, but just like genwunners the Hoennfags childhood memories cloud their judgement about how good Ruby and Sapphire actually were. Hence all the threads wanting Hoenn remakes even though 90% of Pokemon players would say that 1 time through Hoenn is more than enough.

She didn't get any of the gen II games and I don't think I even knew about there being a "gen II". I did get a gameboy advance though and figured some of the new pokemon games would be fun, so I guess I never really have gen II a fair chance but I liked gen III, not the best but it was good.

On one hand, GSC had 16 gyms and loadsacontent, while RSE had more in-depth battles and better graphics

I played both of them a shitload but in the end I think HGSS is the best since it basically combined the best of both.

I was born in 1994 and I played all of them in order.

I like GSC more between the two, although I played more RSE because of them connecting with the GameCube and Gen 3 in general lasting longer than Gen 2.

I loved it because I got it with a brand new SP.
No longer did I need to sit out in a brightly lit room to play pokeymans.
Now I could drape myself in a blanket and play till the wee hours of the morning till I had to go to school.

The graphics, the music, the colours, they were all mind blowing for me.
It felt the most "next gen" of all the pokemon games up until x and y.
The ones on DS were a very half hearted attempt at 3D but not really.

Just all the little touches in gen 3 were what made me love it so much.
For the first time in a pokemon game, different areas genuinely felt like they had atmospheres.

The only let down for me was not being able to transfer from gold and silver
and no Day Night cycle.

Its not the best. But I still loved gen 3.

it was a new direction with pokemon which had little to no previous pokemon in it effectively an island with its own type of pokemon and i really enjoyed the music and secret bases as well as the contests, and didnt really see a problem with the water routes.. Not to mention the GBA was badass. Hoenn is sweet. Gold and silver i didnt like as much as i liked Crystal version. so no not everyone agreed it wasnt as good as the former. If anything they rehashed kanto together with a slightly mirrored kanto and new types. What gave it its popularity probably was because it was on a new system. with a name everyone knew and loved and fancy new color based of gems shiny,pretty and new.

I loved the first three games.
Sapphires music was fantastic, the weather really complimented the mood, and the locations/exploration were top notch.

I didn't like d/p/pt or b/w/2.
Pokemon Y is the first pokemon game i've properly enjoyed since Sapphire.

It was a huge letdown after GSC introduced a new world and access to the old world. Also, the surfing parts were annoying.

Same for Battle Dome, plenty of room to feel like a proper arena. If they remade it though, hopefully they will either change or clarify the battle palace.

Battle Arena is pretty much the battle institute in a lot of ways.

I personally liked having to make pokemon with movesets purely intended for contests. Sinnoh's contests were shit. I will agree somewhat on the underground bases though.

Not really. Gen 3 was as far as I know their hihest selling sets of games, on top of the fact that gen 1 already had a remake. (practically twice now, between FR/LG and then HG/SS having Kanto as part of it), not to mention all the Gen 1 pandering in X/Y.

Hoenn generation improved many aspects of the game. However a few aspects soured its impression on those who played the previous gens.

No visible day and night. This was a highly publicized feature of Gold and Silver and its absence was seen as a downgrade.

You had to start from scratch. The GBA link wasn't compatible with GB/GBC. Plus the whole IV system was overhauled. Your old team of bros were left behind to die a slow death of the cartridge battery running out.

Between Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, you were unable to catch/see every Pokemon up to that point. Not being able to complete the national dex made starting fresh even more of a bitter pill to swallow.

Box legendary that you had to trade for. Now it's a staple, but back then it felt like a kick in the gut. You could catch the other box legendary in Gold and Silver but later in the game.

The Pokemon/new millennium hype train had also massively slowed down. It was still big, but not national news big. To the masses who started with Pokemon, the fad was dying and the game didn't do enough to retain them. To the people who were introduced to Pokemon and their childhood was this game, it's a different story.

Still, to be honest it is doubtful gen 1 will see even more remaking thanks to the amount of gen 1 they already put into X/Y.

Japs didn't like Gen 3 compared to the first two generations so Gamefreak responded by making every Hoenn Pokemon abundant in their future games.

Hoenn fans are a small but vocal minority and their opinions mean nothing to Gamefreak because the money still belongs to the older Gen 1/2 fanbase.

B/W will overtake RSE by the time it stops being sold. R/S turned a hell of a lot of people off the franchise, myself included, it was awful. It's likely that X&Y only just won back a LOT of people who dropped the series because of the Gen 3 shitstorm.

This doesn't make sense. Why would the numbers go up for D/P if people were turned off the series?

I think what made sales go down had nothing to do with game quality. It was just a fad, a fad that we continuously hold on to.

Kanto was the start, and then they made Johto with Kanto, you go to Mt. Silver, beat Red, and your journey is complete. For many people, this signaled the end of their relationship with Pokemon. The audience left before R/S even hit stores.
