Both Normal and Psychic were much better than Dragon in Gen 1. Normal was good because Softboiled, Tauros, Hyper Beam, etc. Psychic was good for obvious reasons, Amnesia helped it even more.

Dragon itself wasn't that powerful, but Dragonite was pretty busted. After an Agility, it outsped a lot of things, and could use Wrap to essentially annoy you to death.

And then you had the strong currents that moved you, and if you ended up on the wrong current, you had to go through the whole route over again.

>I actually am pretty okay with this gen. Most the designs are awesome, the 3d is great, BENCH SITTING, decently diverse, though no one biome was very large. However, the story was shit and plot progression was bad. In most games, you meet the team and the lead early on, battle the lead like seven times with them getting stronger each time, leading up to a grand final battle before the league. Lysander doesn't come out as lead (even though he obviously was) until way late in the game and you fight him three times, almost in a row. Admins were just menials instead of an actual thread, none of the Flare scientists even mattered and they just suddenly throw AZ at you like you're supposed to care. The league was way too easy, I swept through it in about ten minutes. Post game is non-existent but I have hope for Z.

It's the Castlevania IV of the series, in that they improved what the player can do to remove the monotony (exp share, easier to breed, easier to EV train, all the Amie boosts) without improving the gameplay to scale the difficulty.

Major programming errors (e.g. Hyperbeam auto recharges on kills, modifiers didn't work with critical attacks, etc) and type being unbalanced (Physics were too dominant and Bugs were too weak) were the major things wrong with the generation. The Special stat also made things uneven.

Trainer levels were out of whack. More of a metagame issue, but there was too much focus on bulk. Lack of a real antagonist as Neo Team Rocket didn't have a proper leader just a couple of Admins. Although this is subjective I have never liked the Shiny mechanic so that as well.

Teams were kinda odd. Double battles didn't have a large of focus as they should have considering how they were introduced (this was made worse as a lot of moves were useless outside of doubles).
>Gen IV
Battle speed. Over emphasis on sweepers (as an aside my favorite meta is Gen III since it was the most balanced).

The metagame was pretty bad with weather domination.

GTS, an idea that just didn't work at all.

The most linear region ever.

Very noticeable decline in music quality. Much of it sounds off-key, especially in BW2.

Too few actual new Pokemon and too many Mega Evolutions which look like they're ripped straight off DeviantArt.
Countless silly unnecessary minigames and features that even FaceBook wouldn't bother with.
3D battles look and feel like they could have used a second draft.

I feel like I can't properly judge this since I didn't play Gen I until 2006 with FRLG and didn't play Red until 2008. Bug was a sad, sad mess and I felt like a shitlord using Kadabra. N
