Exp. Share

It seems self explanatory, but is experience shared equally between all pokemon in the party with this this turned on?
It seems like my main pokemon receives the same amount of experience whether this is turned on or off. If that's the case, why would anyone ever turn this off?
Is there any downside to using this thing?
