I started playing rating battles with only 2 good pokemon and 4 filler shitmons, getting to 1600 points was easy enough but to get to 1700 I had to seriously step up my game, I'm at 1750 now (top 100 starts at 1770 or so)

I've only got three members of my party assembled. For some reason I thought singles in Rating Battles were 3v3, but they're 6v6. I've got a protean Greninja, Pangoro, and (Mega) Charizard (Y); testing them in Battle Maison.

I gave my Pangoro Poison Jab to maybe hit Fairy types but he's so slow that a fairy attack drops him hard. It's sad because I think he looks badass and I want him to be badass.

I'm not a big fan of doubles/triples/rotation. I struggle enough understanding all of the extant threats, so I don't feel ready for the added depth of double battles and how it would affect my team and movesets.

Gourgeist, Klefki, Diggersby, Carbink, Malamar and Noivern.

I was playing completely anti-meta, using a Focus Sash Gourgeist to completely counter both Talonflame and Greninja. Everything else in the ladder can be destroyed by Klefki, and Klefki itself can be beaten by Infiltrator SubTaunt Noivern. Carbink was for special cases where I felt like I'd need to setup with Diggersby or Malamar to win, so I used a suicide dual screens set.

Once you've got your initial team down, you should try your hand at doubles. It's a lot of fun, and there are some pretty great strategies available to you that are nonexistent in singles.

I initially got into doubles because I wanted to participate in VGC, but ended up loving it so much that it is now my preferred battle style even in casual matches.

Nope. Xerneas, Yveltal and Zygarde are banned. And since no Gen 6 Pokémon can Mega Evolve, it's a pretty vanilla ladder. Quite enjoyable, unless you're bothered by all teams being relatively similar (Greninja, Talonflame, Aegislash and Klefki are everywhere).

I've never done competitive but I'm trying to build a team for both doubles and singles. Right now I have Klefki, Glaceon, and Clawitzer. I figure all three would be useful in both singles and doubles, but I don't know what else to add. I wanted to pair up Glaceon with Mega Abomasnow to take advantage of Snow Warning for Snow Cloak and 100% accurate Blizzards.

It's more exciting, less predictable and less dominated by a small set of Pokemon simply because the combinations and strategies are so vast it's almost impossible to tier efficiently.

Playing at Regionals felt really fresh for me, I actually placed well with unusual Pokemon like Crobat and Ambipom, and Regigigas.

I'm getting my ass kicked. This sucks.

I was pissed because even though my Greninja has 31 speed IV and has been EV trained in speed, the opponent's Greninja got to attack first. When all other factors are equal does the game just coin flip?

Braviary 1HKO'd my Mega Charizard Y with Brave Bird. Same Charizard got killed by a Imposter Charizard. smh

I know this sounds like the cliche shit but it hurts having done all of this "training" to only get my ass kicked.

Train on showdown some; organize your dream team and experiment before you invest in training and breeding. When you practice with that team enough and know how to predict your opponent's moves and think of it as 6v6 instead of 1v1; you'll get it down to an art.

There's this one trainer that always starts off with a /vp/oreon and a M-Kangaskhan.

>vaporeon used muddy water
>your accuracy lowered and your pokemon dun flinched
>vaporeon used blizzard
>critical hit
>kangaskhan used rock throw
>your pokemon dun flinched again

I've got no fucking idea how they outsped my entire team either. Fucking chinks.
Making good progress in rotation battles though!

Smogon has both their own doubles meta, and the VGCs from the past couple years.

I'll note that the VGC changes every year, sometimes dramatically.

Yeah, it's a dickass set, but in 3v3 matchups there's not much your opponent can do about it. The cripple with priority TWave and Foul Play OHKOing Aegislash is more than awesome. Swagger+Sub is for those cases where only hax can save you, and that's frequent in 3v3 since you can and will be outpicked many times.

Yesterday I started playing online battles for the first time, since it's my first handheld pokemon game (used to play on emulators). Got to 1750 rating, but to get further I need to breed more pokemons, as I only have 3 competetive ones.

I think I am doing pretty well, and I like my team of Gliscor/Scizor/Gayardos, although if I get matched against people with some bulky water types, I can't do shit.

I am planning to breed some special sweeper since I don't have any, I might check out Alakhazam, he seems pretty good.

Also, why are there no Americans/Europeans playing at all? Even on low rating, around 1600, I started meeting only Japs.

Yeah, it worked fine with Liepard too last gen! But I'm really liking Klefki more because of better defensive typing and defenses. Maybe one day if I feel like being an even bigger dick I'll take both to the singles ladder. And a Sableye.
