Yeah, the writers realized Ash was incredibly competent in the Sinnoh League and had to bullshit a dude with two legandaries sweeping the entire league.

Seriously, Sinnoh Ash had like the strongest pokemon and best fights. And most of his pokemon had good arcs (except fucking Torterra)

Nearing the end of Diamond/Pearl, he had Staraptor, Torterra, Infernape, Buizel, Gliscor, Gible, and he used some older guys in the tournament like Sceptile, Heracross, Cyndaquil (that evolved into Quilava), Torkoal, Glalie, Swellow, Donphan, and Snorlax.

For that specific match though, he used Sceptile, Heracross, Swellow, Pikachu, Gible, and Torkoal.

Did you not watch how he behaved at all? He wanted to have the strongest Pokemon by planning strategies around them and not caring about their feelings.

On the other hand, the Sinnoh league was full of strategies such as a Power Trick Shuckle and a Trick Room Dusknoir.

The first episode where we saw Paul and his methods was the Starly episode. He just caught three and released the ones that didn't have the moves he wanted. If anything, that seems more like nonSmogonites and breeding for egg moves.

I don't see what the big deal is. The old man traded one of his partners he assumedly trained from a charmander for a completely random shiny magi carp. Sure gyarados is better than charizard, but i would imagine friendship would be more important than a random ass shiny.
