3000 years is a long time. You'd think he'd have enough time to grind up a pretty boss team, but I guess you'd think wrong. I'm also curious to know how people bended Pokemon to their will in those times. Did they use Poke balls? How old is this technology? How did he build a machine that can bring back the dead and turn living beings into immortals? There has to be some hideously fucked up post-apocalyptic history behind it all.

This. Any Pokemon he might have had wouldn't have been immortal (save for Floette, who spurned him out of grief). He's probably owned hundreds of different Pokemon over the years and been forced to watch them all die of old age.

That's probably why he uses a Sigilyph, Golurk, and Torkoal. The former two either don't age or last for an extraordinarily long time, while Torkoals have long lifespans.

AZ was stuffed into the game at the very last second. Lysandre was supposed to be the immortal king of Kalos but Game Freak pussed out on the idea of a benevolent person turning bad.
They didn't have enough time to create an overworld model so they just used his battle mode model. They also fucked up sizing him properly in the cutscenes so they just patched it up by having a couple NPCs say he's a giant.

AZ reclined back against the tree trunk. This new feeling, he just couldn't describe it. It almost felt like tickling but it sent electricity through this body.

Encountering AZ at the end of route 13 is one of the absolute coolest story-related moments I've had in any Pokémon game.
He was just so unexpected, big and mysterious.

Everything after that was a massive letdown of course.
