A newborn pokemon (by default) inherits three of its IVs randomly from it's parents. If one of the parents (either one) is holding a Dknot, the newborn will inherit five of its six total IVs from its parents.

As a sidenote, everstone will pass down natures.

If either Pokemon is holding the Destiny Knot then, instead of randomly generating IVs for your Pokemon, it picks 5 random IVs from the total 12 IVs between your Pokemon.

So, you get two parents with perfect IVs in a total combination of 5 stats you want to pass down, say an Absol with perfect HP and ATK, and a Ditto with perfect DEF, Special DEF and SPD. You breed them together until the Destiny Knot randomly decides to pick those 5 stats out of 12.

You can improve your chances by switching in the inevitable 3-4 IV pokemon you'll end up breeding.

Oh okay, so in other words I quit too soon. Thank you very much. That cleared things up.

Also, I forgot to ask, could a pokemon with less than perfect IVs still be viable?

Not OP but ive been doing this fore like 2 days with Flethling and the best i got was like an occasional 3-4 IVs Feltchling and i eventually just settled for perfect Atk/Def/Spe.

People on here seem to consistantly be able to get loads of 5-6 IV pokemon and pretty quickly as well. Wtf?

Depends on what you want to do with it. For casual playwith friends or goofing around on free play wifi then you can get away with less than perfect IVs. If you're going into ranked then you'll probably want them maxed, especially speed.

Yes, to an extent, but you never know if the difference between good and perfect IVs would've made the difference between success and failure.

You need to switch in the mons as they improve. Breeding mons with 4IVs each will produce a 5IV egg way faster than breeding a 2 and a 3 together, the more maxed IVs the parents have the better the chances those IVs will be passed down to the child.

I got done breeding a pair of 5 IV Scythers last night.

The chain went like so:
>Started with ATK Scyther and HP, DEF, SPD Ditto
>Hatched HP, ATK, SPD Scyther M
>Bred HAS Scyther M with DEF, SDEF, SPD Ditto
>Eventually get HP, DEF, SDEF, SPD Scyther F
>Bred HAS Scyther M with HDsS Scyther
>Eventually get HAsS Scyther with HDsS Scyther
>Eventually get two HADsS Scythers

Took about three hours.

I was doing that but from a 4 IV Fletchling holding a DK, all i got was 3 IV Fletchlings.
