I don't think Hoenn was best, but forcing in an EMPTY Kanto for a few gym battles at the cost of the new region was a terrible idea.

Gen 2 sucked and anything, even Gen 1, would have been an upgrade.

The level scaling wasn't butchered to hell.
The Champion did have three of the same thing.
Even Magma/Aqua still managed blow Gen 2's Team Rocket out of the trumpet filled water.
Hoenn is larger than Johto even if you took out all the water.
You could find Hoenn Pokemon in the Hoenn region unlike finding only Kanto Pokemon in the Johto region.
Nothing was severely underleveled.
The gym leaders had teams that weren't put together by a third grader.
There was way more shit to explore.

Genwunners are nonexistent on this board but I wish the same could be said about gen 2 retards. Ignoring technological differences, even gen 1 is a more cohesive game than the halfassed mess that was gen 2.

The problem is that it existed at all. Having kanto meant cutting down in johto. Lake of rage city is an example of the content cutting. Johto could have been much more than it was, but instead no, we needed to go back to kanto.

I never really understood the big enthusiasm for going back to Kanto for postgame when Johto barely has any new pokemon or new ideas in it in the first place, it's more like Johto was an expansion that you had to play first to get to play in the region that you've already beaten.

If you just picked your starter and trained that then you were fine but enjoy spending hours grinding if you dare raised any more than three pokemon. XY did fuck up with the exp share but atleast I didn't have to spend 3 hours in Victory Road because there's the only reasonable place to bridge the level gap at the Pokemon League.

It is fairly low. The strongest gym leader was Claire, and her Kingdra topped out at 40. Lance's strongest Dragonite was only 50. Giovanni's strongest was 50, and Juan/Wallace was at least 46.

You did have to do a whole fucking lot of grinding to get up to Elite 4 levels

You know I'm glad it didn't have day night. The GBA didn't have a clock and we all know what happened to our silver/gold save files. It would've been a repeat of that. Even now we can move Gen 3 allll the way the Gen 6 because of this fact.

Kanto was cut to shreds and Johto is half the size of pretty much every other region because the Gameboy carts couldn't fit anymore data.

If they just made Johto one single region rather than shove in Kanto then most of its problems probably wouldn't even exist.

Just stained my brain trying to remember my gen II team. Feraligator, Crobat, Espeon, Tyranitar , Houndoom, Steelix. It was awesome. Looking back it was kind of like an expansion pack, but one that added lots of great content over the original. I think XY are the best games since then. Don't understand genwunners when gen two Pokemon were designed at the same time. I can't remember my gen III team, but maybe I would if I saw the dex. Picked Sceptile first. Had a Blaziken and used it in a schoolyard link battle against Rayquaza. It used fly and I thought I was fucked, but Sky Uppercut KO'd it and I was shocked and really happy. Secret bases were amazing, but removing Night was retarded. The landscape was certainly the most interesting, even forgetting all the water.

I really like the concept of going back to Kanto, but this is accurate as fuck. I'm pretty sure I never even beat Red because I wasn't interested in experience farming the Elite Four for 17 hours to go beat that douche. Wait a minute, you couldn't go back to the Elite Four until you beat Red though, right? I forget. 89% of the time, the only reason I play Gen 1 or 2 is so I can use my team on Pokemon Stadium. Not that I don't have nut loads of fun playing them though, but I digress.

There's a buttload of cut content in g/s. Kanto has all its interesting points cut away. The lake of rage city has never been speculated to be blackthorne, sometimes its speculated to be mahogany but my understanding is it existed alongside the two cities. The various event items that do nothing. The already mentioned fact that johto is fucking tiny and missing shit that appears in all the other games, and the level scaling is balls, partially to accommodate the second region.

Gen 2 would have been infinitely better if it had a post game island or two and more going on in the region itself.

Never said I disliked the idea, there should just be a better area to grind. I think each region was equally rad in its own way. Love them all. DP was the weakest entry, other than the mechanics like Physical/Special split and such, but Platinum was great. Possibly my favorite. Love Gen6 though too. It's a contender.

As far as I know, Red doesn't re-appear after a defeat until you beat the E4. You could fly to the E4 whenever you wanted.

It was gimped to shit. You go through it, battle the gym leaders, catch snorlax and battle red. Johto was gimped to shit to include this huge amount of nothing. Gen 2 suffers endlessly because this huge waste of space exists.

Kanto could have been compressed into a battle tower style area consisting entirely of the gym leaders and gym trainers and gen 2 would have benefitted enormously.

What is with people's massive boners for Contests and Secret Bases? I have never really gotten into either of them. Contests were extremely fucking boring and playing the pokeblock game thing was annoying. Secret Bases were fun to a degree, but there wasn't really anything that great about them. I think I would prefer just being able to decorate your room or something rather then a secret base. Hell, no one even fucking got to visit my secret base save for a few friends who had a link cable and then they got pissed at me because that's where they wanted their base to be. Johto was a complete region, it stands on it's own, Kanto was added as a bonus, they delayed the game to add Kanto

Breeding you have a point on, but it was still in the 3rd gen games

day and night and weekly events were missing from RSE because of how the time system on GBA carts worked. and even then, they still made some things work like the rising tides in that one cave

Gen III made held items, and especially BERRIES, even better

Gen III also expanded the dark and steel types' numbers to more than a handful of fucking monsters and made them available a lot earlier on instead of gating them behind the postgame

so yeah, Gen II didn't "take out more than it added". In fact, the things they did take out were do to technical limitations on the native systems that they had no control over
