yeah they're the four strongest people behind the champion, but really what is the point of the elite four in the pokemon universe, these guys are don't look after anything like gym leaders or the champion, they don't even show up for tournaments, they literally just wait for you to fight them in some room. so really as characters what is the point of the elite four?

They actually do wander around and occasionally put their skills to use like the champion does. Lorelei in the Gen 1 remakes.

have to admit, I hate the elite 4 since I seen them in game, was hoping it was going to be a competition VS powerful trainers in some kind of ladder style.

Like in the anime but with to protag winning.

That would be pretty boring in game though.
I mean, you would be up against NPC trainers with main game AI.
Eventually you would just rack up the experience and obliterate everyone and the elite 4 and champion after would just be a chore to you at that point.

They serve as barriers for aspiring trainers. They're exactly like Gym Leaders and it seems, at least to my headcanon, that they're basically "promoted" gym leaders.

They have lives outside of the E4. You see Flint and Lance a few times before the E4. I figured they get called back to Victory Road whenever they get a challenger.

They probably don't spend as much time waiting around as Gym leaders do if you think about it. I mean, think of Malva. She definitely did more than just sit around.
