Speaking as someone who tried to hold off buying X Y until Z and cheaper 3ds's were a thing for me, then borrowed his sister's 3ds to play X Y and yesterday bought his own 3ds, I'd say "Never".

Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum weren't sequel stories, they were just the same story with some alterations. Only B/W2 were actual sequels.
