I know people talk about how the AI will eventually formulate counters to your team, but holy crap it happens fast. I was using a Galvantula as my lead, and after 3 matches, suddenly every team I faced started off with a bulky Pokemon that knew Fire Blast.

Hasn't worked too well past the initial 20, though. Aegislash just gets fucked with priority.

Can be really frustrating in general, though, I once had a Rhydon quick claw 4 turns in a row and decimate my team

Currently thinking of a real team to build. The AI counterpicks you insanely but when you get down to it it's still a dumb as bricks AI. Got a streak of 30 in super singles with random stuff and from personal experience and friend stories I'm starting to get a feel for it.

The AI has no way to play around taunt and magic bounce so for starters I'd suggest packing a taunt user somewhere. I'm thinking of leading with bulky Taunt+Dragon Dance Gyarados. Tyranitar might work better since sandstorm will break focus sashes but it lasting only five turns is a bummer. It also has more weaknesses than Gyarados for the AI to exploit. Klefki is also really good for this but requires your other two Pokemon to be top notch and have great synergy to capitalize on everything it can bring.

The AI will counter pick your offenses and your speed by slapping on specific damage reduction berries or using choice scarf or quick claw. It's important to use bulky Pokemon or Pokemon with priority attacks because anything else is a liability.

The AI will use stealth rock on their first Pokemon if you have Pokemon heavily affected by it in slots 2 and 3. Plan accordingly. Packing rapid spin is overkill but the aforementioned taunt and not using two Pokemon that get wrecked by stealth rock will go a long way.

If your Pokemon lack coverage of a certain type, the opponent will send out those types more often. It's important to have a well balanced team to avoid running into Pokemon you can't take out. Combine the above with the bulky Pokemon suggestion, you want things that can switch in when the situation calls for it.

Beat the first 20 with my starter (Greninja), Charizard X and Florges.
They're the ones I used to complete the game with. Charizard has even Fly on it.

Haven't tried more since I'm currently breeding.

What's the general best set up for a non-unified team (i.e. not reling on TR/Sandstorm etc.)?

I feel it's usually a fast sweeper to open, a bulky staller as a fallback and then another fast cleaner to counteract the first's weaknesses.

Outrage. Return is going to hit for more and not lock you in, plus Outrage will only be super effective on dragons (and useless on fairies), which you should be able to do enough dmg to with return, or failing that with your froslass' ice STAB.

A fucking Sawk OHKO'ed my Flygon with Life Orb Close Combat. Fair enough. Then it proceeded to outspeed my max speed EV Mega Kangaskhan somehow and OHKO it as well. Weezing took down Lanturn by outstalling it after that. I hate Sawk now.

Does IVs matter to you? Cause I got a bunch of 3-4s, almost all of them with HP/SpD. I MIGHT have some with Attack mixed in there.

all with crap natures, undetermined IVs and wonky EV spreads, hell, only Noivern was fully trained

Got up to round 8 before Seismitoad outsped +2-speed Aggron and it hurt itself in confusion after being confused from the last water pulse
Togekiss just ends up getting KO'd by everything so I'm thinking of a replacement

Atleat I'm finally having fun in that shit hole

I got up to 19 in singles until a Rhydon killed my crobat with stone edge, got a quick claw proc on Greninja and KOd my Aegislash in a couple hits.

I've only done it once, went with Huge Power Diggersby, Mega Blaziken, and Aegislash. I've got a Clefable and Tyrantrum now, kind of want to train up a Protean Greninja but I still don't know a good EV spread for it.
