Notice how Nidoran M and Nidoran F don't share a single dex entry even though they're essentially just gender differences? You can even hatch a Nidoran M from a Nidoran F.

Feraligatr is its name. It isn't "Feraligator" shortened because of the character limit, it was named "Feraligatr" officially because of the character limit. They aren't going to change it when the limit is increased.
