A 15-Year Reflection

No.15336365 View ViewReplyOriginalReport
I'm usually not one to wax poetic about anything, but since it's the eve of my 26th birthday, I've been reflecting a bit.

15 years ago, on my 11th birthday, I got a gift I never asked for. It was a Game Boy game, so while I was enthused about getting any game, I didn't quite know what to make of it; I didn't know how to pronounce the title or even what it was about. All I knew was that the cartridge was blue instead of the grey ones I had been getting for years. Also, there was a big turtle-looking thing on the front, with cannons coming out of it's back. So, after all my other gifts had been opened and thoroughly played with, I slid the blue cartridge into my Game Boy and flipped the power switch.

I was hooked as soon as I heard that opening music. It still resonates feelings within me today, and after playing video games for years, I still have a hard time finding any video game intro theme that can top it.

The next stop in my thought process was: how do I get that giant turtle with cannons on it's back, cause I want that thing. My mother also bought me the Player's Guide for the game (pleb, I know), and looking through the back section, I saw that a creature you have the option of starting the game with evolved into the creature on the cover of the game.

After choosing Squirtle, I then of course went through the game the same way everybody else went through it their first time... using only Squirtle/Wartortle/Blastoise on the whole play through.

I haven't stopped playing since, and continue to ALWAYS start with a water type. Even with all the Natures, and the obsession over EVs and IVs, and chain breeding, etc., I always remember back to that first game and remember one thing: NEVER pick Charmander. He sucks.

So, with that out of the way, I'd like to hear your thoughts about your first Pokemon (game) encounter. How'd you learn about it? What was your first interaction with the franchise?

Oh, and pic very related. They even still work.
