Pokemon IP is owned by both Nintendo and GF.
GF develops games exclusively for Nintendo now, they used to be third party but with Nintendo's involvement being bigger each time, they are more like a second party.

It works anyway, wouldn't play (main line) Pokemon in anything other than a Nintendo handheld.

It would sell like shit (meaning less online people) and doesn't have the convenient touch screen (wich I use a lot when playing pokemon).

It also has shit battery life and other less subjective issues than what I mentioned before. Honestly, Vita TV is more appealing than the actual console.

But this is not /v/, so let's stop at that.

So while technically Nintendo doesn't own Pokemon, they do have absolute control over it and can say/do with it as they please.

It has the same battery life as 3DS and the 2000 Vita gets 8 hours, 2 hours over the XL.

I'd rather have Pokemon on Vita or even phones, 400x240 is just too low a res.

XL has a larger battery life than a normal Vita, this is coming from someone that has both, the XL is also much comfortable to play, having a touch screen in the back is bad. It would probably be more comfortable on a phone than in a Vita.

I also own a Vita, 3DS, and 3DS XL.

tHE vITA IS FAR MORE COMFORTABLE, AND GETS BATTERY LIFE SOMETIMES BETTER THAN THE 3ds.

On 75% backlight I get about 4 hours flat playing Gravity Rush.

Vita is also far more comfortable than my XL, and the Vita 2000 has a good deal baetter battery life than the XL.

Also yes muh graphics, I'd rather play a game pokemon with decent graphics.

To compare, Activision was able to buy itself from Vivendi because they're also a publisher that earned the majority of the profits from WoW and COD. GameFreak would need to start publishing some good selling IP's independent from Ninty to do what you described.
