It's probably possible, if they looked into nnets or something similar.

But even without that, it could at least be JRPG gimmick-boss tier. Imagine if rather than a type theme, gyms and rivals instead had strategy themes - this guy abuses Trick Room, this guy constantly uses switching moves, this guy subseeds and subpunches. It wouldn't be difficult on the level of an online battle, but it would be fairly simple to program and would make the supposedly-tough fights at least require some thought about how to counter them.

Also, it wouldn't be hard to have some kind of crude "advantage" calculation for each of an NPC's pokemon against yours, and have them have a chance to switch if one of their benched pokemon is significantly higher. Even if it's not perfect, I think NPCs being able to switch outside of exceptional circumstances would liven up battles considerably.

All they need to do is give them actual strategies and synergies like giving them a rain team or a BP team or whatever, rather than a couple of random mediocre Pokemon that use attacks largely at random. They don't need to be brick-wall hard, just make you think and engage with the game a little.

Look at, say, Starcraft. The main campaign is nothing like an online match, but it still works like a very extended tutorial, with each mission encouraging the playing to learn how to use or counter a new trick.

And you could always just have an easy mode / hard mode switch.

Think of it this way, sure the game balances everyone at lvl 50 when you do online battles on the PSS, but Pokemon who have evolved, have late-game moves, and have had the time to gain EVs naturally or even be properly IV bred and EV trained will still have a major advantage against those that haven't.

I always assumed that originally each region had more than 8 badges to obtain, and that in-universe a person only needed to defeat 8 in order to qualify for the league, and they can be defeated in any order. The only reason it's only 8 within the games is because it's been designed specifically that way in order to guide the player along a specific, linear order without getting them confused and it's tuned to the appropriate level curve.

On a side note, I'd like to see a game where a region has 16 gyms, and you get to decide which ones you do before facing the league. Of course that's not going to happen for numerous reasons...

Rivals were such a huge letdown in X/Y, holy fuck. I'm not someone who thinks all rivals should be 69edgy666me assholes, but god damn these rivals just sucked.

Calem/Serena is god damn stupid. Their team remains almost the exact same until the very end of the game, and they don't have a competitive spirit. Gary, Silver, Barry, and Cheren all had some spirit, and vowed to get better whenever you beat them. Calem/Serena just bends over and takes it like a bitch.

Shauna was just a generic cute girl who would bother you. At least Bianca went through some character development and had a competent team. I will say she's better than Calem/Serena though; she isn't meant to be an actual rival so you don't get pissed at her sucking, and she does help you out by luring away some Flare admins and giving you her starter in the post-game.

Trevor was conceptually cool but they dropped the fuckin' ball by making it impossible to lose in your "Pokedex battles."

I have no idea what they fuck they were thinking of when they added Tierno. There is no dance feature in the game and he doesn't even using dancing Pokemon.

Also, what really annoyed me is that only Serena and Shauna had starters. They had a set of Kanto starters and a set of Kalos starters, they could have totally given each rival a starter, but apparently that didn't occur to Gamefreak.

And the worst part? Gamefreak never changes up the rivals between versions, so they're destined to remain shit in Z or whatever. At best, they'll just have better teams.

look, man i just don't think characters who are constantly in your fucking face about how close you are to them and how you're fated to be friends when they're no deeper than a fucking puddle and just drag you along for whatever reason are very nice friends. cheren, bianca, and barry felt like close pals and that you had known them for a long time. x/y rivals just kinda... show up, eat your pizza, tell you how nice you are for ordering the pizza, then leave.
