Blue, Gold, SS, and Y for me.

As much as I love gen 3, the art direction on those covers is questionable. They got better in Gen 4, but I don't care for the legendaries. Same with B/W. B2/W2 are way too busy. The cover design on X/Y is great, and I like the style of both of the legendaries as well.

Also, not to be a hideous hipster, but I've always loved the original moonrune design for green version.

I'd be interested to see what the cover art looks like in countries that aren't the US/Canada and Japan too, actually.

I like the artstyle of the Pokemons and how the overlap the "Game Boy" print, so it still looks natural. That shadow on the GBA letters from R/S looks fucked up

I like the artwork of the pokemon themselves on the Gen 1/2 covers best, but Sugimori can't into Photoshop compositions with watercolor. His watercolor stuff overlayed on a digital background always looked odd. A lot of his work from 98-01 suffers from that.

They're just,

They're just banging, guys. The first three are great for similar reasons (especially how Pikachu looks the most dynamic of the bunch, instead of just posing dramatically), but X got that neat "mostly white with two lines of color" design which is kind of hipster but in an appealing way.

I say Platinum or X. The others are either pretty bland or I don't like their colors or the artwork in general. Platinum is dynamic compared to the others that just have boring bg and the Pokemon is just slapped there. X has nice colors that flow together and are harmonic. The elements are put well, like, Xerneas is in the middle of X. I also kinda like the sky in Y cover, but too bad the cover is kinda out of place in other ways. Even though I like Y as a game more the cover is worse than X. The colors don't go together well and it's like they just mindlessly slapped the Y and Yveltal on the cover. I wish they made some different artwork that could've made Yveltal look good in the center of the picture like they did with X. Also Y cover would've been better if they used White on it like they did with X. I do see what they were trying to do there, but it doesn't compliment the Y cover's coloration, this is because the sky picture is kinda light colored. I think they should've used a scenery with darker coloration, then the black would fit more.

Man Y cover is so shit compared to majestic X. Not that it matters but this thread was about the covers, so yeah.

The label for Gameboy Advance games made every box look ugly. And just like most of the Pokemon from then, the Gen 5 legendaries look terrible so naturally the boxes do too.

I really like the Soul Silver cover. I also like the Platinum cover for how the background composition and the posing of Giratina differentiates it from Diamond and Pearl.

While I get the point of the X and Y covers, I'm not keen on the X and Y shapes behind the pokemon. If they'd kept those gorgeous woodland and sky patterns across the whole background, those could very well be top-tier covers for me.

X is the more aesthetically pleasing one, while Y has some great use of complimentary colors.

Much nicer than the typical 'Pokemon on swirly colored background' motif we had going in the past.

Honorable mention goes to Soul Silver, Red/Blue out of nostalgia, and Crystal for being better than GBC Gold/Silver.

It's a hard question because each new pkémon game is technically better than the older ones, so it comes down to nostalgia or story.

So for me it's probably White since it had the best story IMO, nostalgia and simplicity makes me choose Yellow but it has more to do with the the fun I made out of the game than what it actually had to offer.

I have fond memories of platinum because it's when I first started using EVs and breeding, and I love some of the cities and environments on Gen III a lot.

Each game had something I liked.

With design in mind, I like the XY covers the best, but the nostalgia factor with Crystal, plus the fact that Suicune and me have been bros since GS (and obviously Crystal too), not to mention the countless hours i poured into that cartridge on summer vacations, I'd probably say my overall would be Crystal, with XY as an honorable mention (although the design of XY is better I'd say)
