Chespin was my first pick. I hate how limited he becomes when he evolves to Chesnaught. You get used to that early game versatility where Quilladin can hit almost anything neutrally, then, it's gone just like that.. Plus, there are other fighting and grass types in game that do what he does better. Especially Fighting types. holy shit. You can get Riolu, Combusken, Machop, Mienfoo, Croagunk, Scraggy, and Pancham all before the 2nd gym, holy shit.
Fennekin is your standard sweeper. Can hit fast and hard. Gets Shadow Ball, STAB Psychic and Flamethrower and I've even seen some Fennekin with Thunder, so there's that.
Froakie was the most useful for me. Very versatile and can hit everything as a Greninja with DP/Night Slash, Surf, Extrasensory, and Ice Beam.
The main thing I hate about the starters is that there are other Pokemon you can catch that do what they all do and in some cases better. They would stand out so much more if there weren't 400+ Pokemon available pre-national dex.
