He was a champion, a rival, AND a villain team leader. Archetypes aren't always strict and rigid.

I'm pretty sure you have to specifically challenge the champion for the title, and if you win, you become the new champion.

Has there been a game where the player is challenged for the championship after winning the title? I always thought it was a little silly that you can steal the title from Blue/Green/Gary in less than a day after he gets it and then go uncontested for all time after that.

There hasn't.

I always assumed that the MC just gives up the title after winning, so they wouldn't be obligated to stick around in some room waiting for challengers. A title defense option would be pretty cool, though.
